Any dentists around ? Tooth extraction failed due to pain under local anesthetic

this is for my daughter. She has the injections but said it was still painful when the tooth was put pressure in to it. Dentist has referred the case to the hospital. Any idea what the hospital are likely to recommend? It’s for orthodontic treatment

Probably G.A

Do you think deep sedation won’t be considered? Or as it’s for orthodontic treatment would they refuse and say just to leave it? I need to speak to my daughter and see how she feels. Not sure if we should try local again but with a different dentist.

Is it infected? The numbing often fails if there's an infection.

I had an absessed molar that was quite painful to remove. I can't have the injections with adrenaline in them either so it was doubly painful. Did manage it the second time round though!

No it’s not infected. Just reading that link and it mentions Ehlers Danlos syndrome can make it difficult for local anesthetic to work. That interesting as she has some joint hypermobility, although not diagnosed as Eds as such

I sometimes think not enough consideration is given to the fact these injections don't work in the same way for everyone. Last time I went to the dentist she injected, waited for literally a couple of minutes and then cracked on, at which point I could still feel everything. She stopped injected again, carried on, I could feel most of it. 30 minutes later however I couldn't feel a thing. This isn't the first time that's happened to me, I think they just take longer to kick in with me than with others but the dentist assumes one size fits all so ploughs on...

Sounds a rubbish dentist. Mine waited easily 15 mins for the first injection to work, and then topped it up when he tested my gum for feeling. In the end I had sine pain but it was bearable and I was fed up of waiting

Oh god, your poor daughter. I'm a martyr to my teeth, may I grab a dentist here too please?

I have a small recurrence of infection at the tips of the roots of two adjacent teeth, both previously root treated. Anti biotics has helped with pain in the past and now both a bit grumbly but not painful.

Dentist says if they flare up into pain then the only treatment is extraction. I asked for stronger antibiotics but she said no.

Surely anti biotics would be tried before extraction? I've only ever had five days of penicillin, loads of people get multiple pills to clear dental infection.

I don't mind extraction if it means an end to pain, but these teeth are side by side so I'd need to somehow fill a big gap.

I think I'm going to change dentists as I just don't have faith in her.

I used to end up with about six injections and a very patient dentist waiting for it to finally take effect. Took forever for it to wear off so I could feel my lips and jaw afterwards.

That was a while back, but things seem to have changed (what they use, or my reaction to it) so I usually get by with the normal amount these days.

I have always found dental anaesthesia does not work completely.
Years ago I wasn't believed but now there is more understanding. It could be there are additional nerve endings which need more and we'll sited injections, I am told. I also hear that the adrenaline if you are really scared can affect how well it works.
I have sedation for extractions and I haven't encountered any problems this way.
