Tonsil (again) pic attached

Got a long term swollen tonsil that's quite enlarged.
I've had tonsillitis and been treated but the swollen one stays the same.
Anyone else got a random large tonsil?

What did the doc say about it?
I think you should ask them again and show it post treatment.

Sux2buthen · 14/08/2022 17:56

To be honest I don't think she thought anything of it because I had the other gross signs of tonsillitis. I haven't been back but I'm thinking perhaps I will.
I know I sound a bit dim but it's only dawning on me the last few days that I can't remember a time when it wasn't swollen. But that's because I only look if I have a sore throat so wouldn't have realised. I'm pretty sure it's been like this a while now I'm thinking about it.

Yes I think it’s definitely worth going back and saying it’s still swollen. And it doesn’t go back to normal size. It might be normal for you but GP should take a look.

It stays swollen when you dont have an infection?

Elephant2456 · 14/08/2022 18:31

I am not meaning to be alarmist, but you need to get that properly assessed.
send that photo on an E Consult (if you have the facility at your surgery). And mention how long it’s been present.

Sux2buthen · 14/08/2022 18:34

I'm pretty sure it stays about the same yes. It's really only occurred to me the past few days that it's been a while now. I'm totally not ill at the moment and this is todays pic, i only looked out of sudden curiosity. It hasn't always been like this but I couldn't put a time amount on how long

My GP surgery doesn't do that unfortunately, there's almost no online help at all from them

I clicked on your thread as I’ve been googling tonsils as my dd thinks she has tonsil stones and apparently she’s been getting these awhile!

Call your doctor tomorrow and ask to be seen. Explain one tonsil is swollen even when you don’t have an infection abd you’d like if checked out.

Sux2buthen · 14/08/2022 18:50

Yes I will give it a go.
Not sure what tonsil stones are, not sure I dare Google Grin
So it seems the consensus is I'm right to get checked then.
I avoid docs as much as possible because it's always a performance getting seen but I think it's worth a go

Rummikub · 14/08/2022 18:56

Yes definitely go get checked out. You’re right to do so. Important to say it remains swollen without an infection.

I feel that getting to see the doc is an ordeal in itself and I also feel like they try to gatekeep appointments too effectively!

I didn’t know what they were either, never had them, but do get tonsillitis regularly. They look like ulcers on tonsils. I had to have a sit down when I looked in my dds mouth.

Sux2buthen · 14/08/2022 20:13

Trying to get into the doctors here is like getting through the doors in the labyrinth film 🤣
I googled tonsil stones, crikey 😳

I was lucky enough to have a tonsillectomy in 2007.. aged 36 (not pleasant) but my god has it changed my life... if you are getting this recurrently then push for it !!

Rummikub · 14/08/2022 22:55

@Lindasllama does it make you more prone to chest infections?

@Sux2buthen they look unpleasant don’t they!

Mossstitch · 15/08/2022 23:20

I have one that is massively larger than the other but it's been like that for decades, never really thought anything of it🤷did used to get tonsillitis quite regularly until my 30s (60s now so can't be anything sinister else I'd be dead by now😳). Has been quite useful for all the covid tests, easier to get at😂

Sux2buthen · 17/08/2022 14:04

Spoke to the doctor the next day and he said tonsillitis can take months to truly go but that if anything more happened to call and he would arrange a swab.
Today I woke almost unable to breathe properly it was very painful and totally random. I called again and he asked for a photo.
I need to go in for a swab to be sent off on Friday even if it's gone down again. He said this can be a few things so I will update if it's any help to anyone or even if it's not lol.
I've attached todays photo

Rummikub · 17/08/2022 21:18

im glad you went and are getting a swab
Sounds frightening not being able to breathe

Sux2buthen · 17/08/2022 22:09

Thank you. I could breathe technically I suppose it I'd be dead lol but it was incredibly painful. I kept drinking water until it soothed a bit even that hurt.
I'm dreading how it will be tomorrow morning, not having the fan on tonight in case it dries my throat even more

Would sleeping with your head on two pillows help? Si
youre not flat or laying on your back ?

Sux2buthen · 18/08/2022 22:30

Sorry just seen this. I woke up not inflamed anymore but still swollen on one side. Very weird!

OP posts:
Rummikub · 18/08/2022 23:07

Does sound weird!
Swab is tomorrow?

Cece92 · 18/08/2022 23:37

Hi 😊 could it possibly be your adenoids? Only because my daughters throat is like this but both sides and has been for years. A senior doc in the hospital pointed it out and said it's her adenoids. Mines are the same and we both cannot sleep unless mouths are wide open. We Borh breath very heavy through our mouths at night. I'm very prone to tonsillitis and it is horrid. I have begged for them to be removed but my GP would rather prescribe antibiotics 6-7 times a year. (Expensive ones as I'm allergic to penicillin) I get flu like symptoms so usually out the game for around a week sometimes longer. Xxx

Sux2buthen · 20/08/2022 09:38

I will ask about adenoids, I have no idea. I couldn't get in yesterday 🙄I will try again Monday, red raw again today.
The ringing at 8 thing is such a pain

Any luck op?

i think I might’ve jinxed myself by looking up tonsils. Have ended up with tonsillitis v badly! Lots of white coating yuk!

Sux2buthen · 01/09/2022 22:12

Seems I developed some kind of secondary infection that's not tonsillitis so I've been given different antibiotics that have made me feel very dodgy lol. But two more doses to go and my throat isn't hurting now.
Still swollen though!
Hope you feel better soon

OP posts:
Rummikub · 01/09/2022 22:21

Oh what ?? That sounds awful, poor you.
Secondary threat infection?

first couple days I couldn’t keep any meds down.

Hope you feel better soon too. Have they said the swelling should go eventually too?

Sux2buthen · 01/09/2022 22:36

I've just had a look and it has gone down a bit actually they must be working!
I was a bit concerning because the doctor took it all very seriously and wouldn't even let my children in the room, they had to sit behind the desk in reception which is unheard of at my practice. But after a swab he rang and wasn't specific but gave me doxy something or other and it's doing the trick
