Rapid unexplained weight gain

According to my scales, I've put on about a stone in the past two weeks. From 11st10 to 12st8. They seem to be accurate for my husband.

I have not been eating any more than I usually do and am active (gym 3x week) as normal. I have had an ovarian cyst in the past so was worried about that, but haven't had any tummy pain or anything. I do look a bit fatter but not massively?

I cannot figure out what the issue could be. I have had headaches and been very tired, but other than that no thyroid symptoms and I have a toddler so neither thing is inexplicable. Also I'm assuming it wouldn't be that fast or drastic.

I'm only 31 and have no menopause symptoms or anything. I am 100% not pregnant (I had a miscarriage and scan to confirm empty womb two months ago and haven't had sex since)

Should I be worried/ring GP or just leave it and cut back on food? I really haven't eaten loads though, less if anything!

I would speak to the GP yes. You need to eat an extra 3000 calories to gain 1 pound, I suspect you would have noticed eating an extra 36,000 calories in 2 weeks.

Have you eaten a lot of carbs like pasta/rice in the past week maybe? That might account for 5-6 pounds as your body will be holding water.

Hot weather makes you store more water so that could be part of it?

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 14/08/2022 08:52

Do you feel bloated? Is your skin puffy? It does sound very odd and a GP visit might be best. Even if it was a thyroid issue or related to your recent loss, it's concerning that it's happened so quickly.

I am bloated - I sort of assumed due to heat but my tummy is definitely quite bloated and I don't gain weight there usually, I'm an extreme pear shape and it goes to my thighs first. I'll call GP tomorrow I think but feel a right idiot!

Have you tried different scales? Mine do all kinds of wrong numbers when the battery is low

Felicity42 · 15/08/2022 01:21

If you put the scales on carpet this time it adds a hefty chunk.

Water retention.

@salemsongbird what was it in the end? Did you work it out? I've got a similar issue and don't know what's going on.
