Anyone had wisdom tooth extraction done in hospital?

If so, how long did it take to get your appointment after being referred by the dentist?

I'm going back to the dentist on Monday for a review of the x ray to see what this latest AGONISING wisdom tooth is doing. The dentist has said she thinks I probably will need to be referred to hospital, BUT there is a long waiting list. I am in a lot of pain, have antibiotics (second lot) and nurofen plus but its getting worse and worse.

Feel like headbutting the walls, its so bad .

If a referral is going to take weeks, I don't know what I'm going to do! Someone please tell me they got theirs quickly!

sorry puff - I think I waited around 4 months (this was about 8 years ago). If it's agony isn't there anyway your dentist can try and get you bumped up the list?

Sounds like you have an infection or abscess?

They won't treat the tooth until the infection has been treated anyway I shouldn't think.

I'm sure if you are in a lot of pain you can push for an emergency referral.

Thought, oh I can answer this one as I've had this, but, tbh, I can't for the life of me remember how long the referral took. Mine wasn't agonising, just an awkward position which might prove problematic in the future so they took it out.

Hope you get a referral quickly. I'm sure if you emphasise just how agonising it is, they might be able to fit you in. Alternatively, could you go to A&E?

I've had two out before, but these were done at the dentist under anaesthetic. I don't really understand why I would need to go to the hospital for this one.

I had mine out in hospital because the tooth roots were tangled and therefore complications were more likely. I think.

It is infected (for the second time in a few weeks). It's just that last time, the antibiotics had kicked in by now ( 3 days in) and the worst of the pain had dissipated and it just went back to being irritating. This is grim now. I think if I went to A&E they'd tell me to bog off and see the dentist on Monday. I don't think there is anything stronger than nurofen plus that I can take.

You can take both paracetamol AND ibuprofen puff. I also found the only thing that helped me when I had an agonising abscess was warm salt water mouth washes - they REALLY helped to numb the pain. Also I found aspirin more effective than paracetamol.

poor you puff, I'm not one for painkillers but surely there are some more effective than the ones you're taking? Maybe your GP could prescribe you some?

Otherwise, isn't codeine more effective than nurofen? There is a headache tablet called syndol that has paracetomal, codeine and caffeine (have no idea why caffeine- didn't perk me up at all and I am very caffeine sensitive). When I had very bad sinusitis once it was the only thing that let me get a good night's sleep. It was very powerful but having said that, I don't normally take painkillers so maybe it affected me more.

Seriously though, I would definitely pop along to the chemist if I was you and get some better pain relief. Also, GP/dentist have different methods of referral - when my dd was referred I noticed they ticked 'routine referral' so we waited 6 months. There were 2 other boxes they could have ticked - one was emergency which I guess meant straight away and another one was urgent which I think meant in the next few weeks so I would definitely badger your dentist to make sure he gives you an urgent appointment!!

ps we weren't referred for dentist related stuff but I can't see why it would work any differently.

oh sorry puff - I see nurofen plus does have codeine in it. Big sympathy to you. I would def go to GP and get a prescription for some other stuff even if you just take them while you've got this infection. To me, toothache is one of the worst pains in the world.

Thanks folks, If this doesn't improve I shall have to tell the dentist I need the referral urgently. I've had wisdom tooth probs before, but nothing like this! My ear and my throat on that side are very painful too .

I have two really mega-watt painkillers left which were prescribed for something else in hospital last year. I think I'll take one of those before bedtime.

I would puff - I've been taking my co-dydramol tabs left over from birth of ds3 in Aug as AF has returned with a vengance and is agony. Can you get some co-dydramol or co-codamol from the docs?

My wisdom tooth referal was quick coming through if I remember. Wasn't pleasant though I have to say - still, you need that thing out!

dh has his taken out in hospital mainly because there was an infection underneath and the procedure would have taken a long time. He also has a particularly small mouth so would have been awkward for the dentist to do in her surgery. He had Voltarol painkillers afterwards - in suppository form iirc! - which were strong and anti-imflammatory. Perhaps your dentisit could prescribe similar in the meantime. Hope your wait is not too long.

Hello Puff - I have had wisdom teeth (all of them before they had even emerged from the gum) extracted by operation under general anathestic at the dental hospital day surgery clinic, e.g. in at 6 a.m. home by 1.00 p.m. I also had one normal tooth pulled at hospital too. Referral from dentists can take anywhere from 3 weeks to a couple of months in my experience. Once there you twll the consultant you are in absolute agony - and you genuinely are! and they will have you in for the extraction in the next day or two.

My hospital Kings has a dental school with an emergency clinic open evenings and weekends for drop in patients who need emergency treatment NHS right there and then - you would be a perfect candidate. Is there something like this near you?

Awwww mega hugs to you puff I have total sympathy with you hun xx. I had a nasty one years ago but luckily could have it out at dentist. It was so bad dh had to grab rusty pliers off me as I was going to do the job myself! (don't try this at home) I hope and pray you get seen soon hun. I'd keep going to the dentist crying until he forces an appointment for you.

Thanks for the extra info folks - its still horrendous - the pharmacist says I've got the strongest painkillers they can give without prescription. I'm going to tell the dentist on Monday just how bad the pain is - I was sick last night because it hurt so much . If it kicks off as badly tonight (night time seems particularly grim), I'm off to A&E for stronger medication.

Had mine done in hospital but only because they were removing other teeth from the palette that had not come through so thought they'd do wisdom teeth at the same time. Had sores round my mouth where they'd clamped it open, sore throat where I think pipe went down and hamster face!! Soon recovered.

Poor you - Can't the dentist do it? I had mine out at the surgery under a local. Quite expensive and not very pleasant but totally painless. Go and kick up a fuss with the dentist - you can't be expected to function under that sort of pain. good luck.

An update on me and my bl**dy wisdom tooth (I know its boring but I am feeling unashamedly sorry for myself!).

It is still AGONY .

Went to A & E on Sat night, they gave me slightly stronger painkillers than ones I had (apparently the strongest they could give me, I knew they would be crap and useless).

Rang St Thomas' Hospital's (London) dental unit Sunday. They don't do extractions at the weekend, and the dentist said it didn't sound like the infection had sufficiently cleared to allow surgery to be performed anyway.

Went back to my usual dentist today. Have an urgent referral to hospital but this will still take 2 to 3 weeks.

The infection still isn't under control apparently, so was given a big one off mega antibiotic dose, plus two further types of antibiotics to take.

Have I become immune to antibiotics? I'm on my sixth course in 2 months - why the hell aren't they working? .

I shall give myself a virtual ((((hug)))) and hope for some sleep tonight.

Hi Puff, I had the same thing a couple of years ago, all of my 4 wisdom teeth are growing sideways but one particular bottom right was coming through first and causing me agony, I kept saying to the dentist how much it hurt and begged her to x-ray it, she did and then she understood!! I got referred to the hospital and it took about 7 months - I'm petrified of the hospital (I suffer from Emetophobia) and have only been once in my 26 years to give birth to my son! The day I was there I was in agony and so nervous I can't tell you but thats how bad the pain was (it had to be bad for me to agree to the hospital). When I got there I got changed and had my pre-med, I sat and waited I was fifth on the list and then the surgeon came round and looked at me and my x-rays and told me to get dressed. I felt a mix of crying with relief at getting out of there untouched and cry of disappointment as I had psyched myself up by telling myself that no matter what by tonight it would all be over!! To cut to the chase - sorry I have rambled - she told me to come back in a week to the normal surgery ahd she would extract the tooth in front and that would allow my wisdom tooth to come through. What really got me was she said my dentist could have done this when the pain started!! Anyway after that I was fine and my wisdom tooth is pushing through, it look odd though on its side but (touch wood) no pain since. I'm just worried now about the other three as they have started pushing their way through but as yet no pain. But my dentist also gave me antibotics and they didn't work, the surgeon said that this was probably because there was no infection there.x

mum2jay, this is my conclusion now, I don't think there is any infection, but its so painful, the dentist assumed there still was.

You have my sympathies, there was nothing like that pain, I couldn't sit still, I kept twitching about! I really hope they sort it ous soon for you.xXx
