Temperature in a 4 yo - but no illness or problem after - why?

Ds had a temperature (38.5) last night, so I gave him a dose of Calpol before bed. I checked on him in the night and he was still hot, but he woke this morning with no sign of a temperature. He didn't complain of feeling ill last night - he was just hot - and he has shown no signs of an illness or any problem since.

Of course, I'm pleased that he seems well, but I'm left feeling a bit stumped as to why he had a mystery temperature. He has never had a high temperature before either.

it's very unusual for a four year old never to have had a high temperature!

did he have a sore throat?

some child hood illnesses cause a high temperature with no other symptoms before resulting in a rash.

No, he really hasn't ever had a temperature before - he's never been ill either (apart from a cold) or had to go to the doctor (I put it down to him bfing for so long - until 3.9)

He didn't have a headache, or sore throat, no rash - nothing. He didn't even complain that he felt ill. And he wasn't whingey or clingy like he is before he gets a cold. I am so stumped.

Thanks emandjules - will keep an eye on him. Poor thing already thinks I'm loopy as I keep checking his body for a rash or spots!

He could have a "sub clinical" infection of some kind, but he has fought it off bedfore the symptoms established.

A temperature is the bodys way of fighting off infection ie it raises the temp to kill off the bugs. So maybe your son done this effectively?
