How long after a colonoscopy does diarrhoea last? 😬

Mine is tomorrow afternoon. Am starting the horrid prep (tastes vile) and need to be back at work Thursday morning.

Suddenly worried the diarrhoea won't stop. Then googled which did nothing to allay my fears.

You'll be fine the next day. I've had upwards of 15 and just eat normally afterwards, the prep wears off very quickly.

thesootherfairy · 09/08/2022 18:29

Thank you!
That is really good to know.

This plenvu prep is disgusting.
Mango flavour! I don't think so. Seagulls salty diarrhoea more like 🤮

mathanxiety · 09/08/2022 18:31

You'll be fine afterwards. Eat and drink pretty much as normal. Maybe lay off the caffeine.

They will offer you sedation for the procedure. Take it.

thesootherfairy · 09/08/2022 18:34

@mathanxiety
I'm very much planning on taking everything that they offer!
I'm a bit concerned about actually pooing on them during the procedure.
This is awful. Tummy is gurgling loudly already.

They really really won't care if you poo during the procedure. If it helps, I poo'd during sex once. That was far less expected and still handled graciously 🤣

thesootherfairy · 09/08/2022 20:20

😂 @chilliesandspices
It's quite erm explosive. Bit worried about that tbh

This is horrid.

My experience :

I would recommend wiping with baby wipes tonight or maybe put vaseline on as it starts to burn after a while.

It took me quite a few hours to empty, but I ended up still having to go one more time in the morning. I let them know and they did an enema before the procedure to make sure.

They have seen it all before, so don't worry. Good luck!

thesootherfairy · 09/08/2022 21:24

Thank you. The prep has done its job. It's literally just clear liquid now. Last one didn't even have bits in. Sorry TMI. 🤢

Bum hurts. Ouch 😣

OP posts:
Justwingingit2005 · 09/08/2022 21:42

My loo trips stopped 2 hrs after the second jug. Sore arse lasted longer!

thesootherfairy · 09/08/2022 22:02

It's slowed. I'm off the loo. Drinking water. Feel very dehydrated now.

And yes bum will be sore for a while.

I have had plenvu so have another dose to take in the morning 🤮

thesootherfairy · 10/08/2022 10:00

I have such bad tummy pain. It's literally killing me.

Does anyone know if you can take gaviscon before the colonoscopy?

The pain is terrible. I've taken paracetamol and codeine already and it hasn't done much.

Feels like my stomach lining has been stripped away by the second lot of prep. Gaviscon would help soothe it.

Ouch ouch ouch

OP posts:
mynameischloe · 10/08/2022 20:43

How's it going, OP? Hope it all went okay.

Luggagerack · 10/08/2022 22:23

How did it all go? I’ve got one on Friday 😳

thesootherfairy · 10/08/2022 23:00

It didn't.
I turned up was taken it to the ward, gowned up and cannula in hand.
My bed was next to the nurses station.
When I was taken it I was told I was up first.
I sat for half an hour and I could hear them looking for the surgeon. They then rang him. He was at a different hospital covering there.
So they had no surgeon.
They started frantically ringing around asking "what do we do now?" And asking if different department had anyone who had used a scope before 😡

They then decided to find a nurse who had previously done endoscopy.
Would I like that? I said I'd rather go home.
Three of them came into my area and were really pushing me to take this nurse. Promising me it would all be fine.

I agreed and ended up wishing I hadn't.
At the very start of the procedure, she was ramming this thing into my insides.

Despite sedation I was crying and screaming so much due to the pain, 4 people came running into the room

Because she didn't know how to advance the scope properly, they abandoned it. But not before tearing my bum and battering my insides.

I rang my husband and he was already waiting and he took me straight out without waiting. They kept asking if I wanted drinks and a biscuit. Did I fuck! I had wanted not to have my insides rearranged by someone who thought they would practise on me.

I have such bad stomach pain now from where this nurse was ramming the scope and she tore my bum during it so I am now bleeding from my bum.

Awful. So if you turn up and there's no surgeon, leave immediately! Don't let them ring around and find someone because it will be someone who isn't properly trained or on practise of the procedure and it will really hurt.

OP posts:
mathanxiety · 10/08/2022 23:33

That is gobsmacking!

File a complaint immediately. Contact your MP.

That nurse should be stricken from the rolls immediately and everybody involved in making the decision to proceed should be seriously disciplined.

This is gross malpractice.

BlackWhiteRed · 10/08/2022 23:45

I agree this is malpractice and highly unusual.

You must complain. It's absolutely not ok for them to just try their hand at a procedure without being trained... what the actual fuck?!

You may have been injured - I would talk to your GP. They will take it very seriously.

thesootherfairy · 10/08/2022 23:48

I doubt complaining will achieve anything. Our MP is too busy trying to get a cabinet post after dropping out of the leadership race I expect.

Our local hospital is well known for being utterly crap. They have managed to sink to new lows.

My insides are agony. I'll have to ring my GP in the morning I think.

My poor bum is shredded. There was less tearing during childbirth.

And what kind of a Trust had a brand spanking new hospital, an entire ward with 30 beds, full nursing and ancillary staff on duty but they had no doctor and no surgeon on duty! They "forgot" to organise that. As in the duty roster management.

When they hurt me during the procedure they were ringing a&e after to try to get a doctor to see me and check me over and prescribe pain relief for me to take home.

Didn't need to wait for that as I have arthritis and a ton of painkillers at home anyway. And frankly I didn't want to hang around any longer in case they decided to practice on me some more.

FrasierCraneDay · 10/08/2022 23:54

Jesus Christ please file a complaint when you feel up to it Flowers
I am disgusted you were treat like that, what an absolute disgrace. As for the nurse that agreed to do it with zero training she should be held accountable! Take it easy and I truly hope you feel much better soon

mathanxiety · 11/08/2022 00:20

Please complain!

And also go to A&E so the damage can be treated and documented.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council should be informed that there is a nurse on their rolls who knows no better than to agree to this and proceed to perform an illegal procedure on you. Whoever she is, she is not fit to practice. If she's done it before that's horrific. She had a choice and she should have said a big fat NO.

thesootherfairy · 11/08/2022 00:30

I don't know why they persisted to be honest. They could just have cancelled.
I could hear them ringing around hospitals looking for a doctor and a surgeon to step in.
Surely when you're at that point you just abandon the idea.

I'm in agony. I would wake DH and get him to take me to a&e but it would need to be a different one. I'm not going back there. Awful place. Fully of fumbling incompetence.

I'm also really upset and angry. I'm angry at myself for getting pressured into it. Angry at myself for not just leaving. What was I thinking.
They just really pressured me. And I had initially said no but then there was a lot of tutting and eye rolling and waste of time etc was mentioned. And all of that "you're here now" well I was there but their surgeon wasn't!

Out of curiosity are you in NE England? Obviously don't feel pressured into answering that but I've heard similar about a hospital there, and I kind of hope it's the only one that's that inept

thesootherfairy · 11/08/2022 00:48

@FrasierCraneDay
No I'm in Kent.
Yikes. It's clearly common. 😬

I'm sorry you had this happen it's awful.

Can I ask if you were hurt during yours and whether you needed to see a doctor after?

Only asking because I'm in agony and wondering whether to wake DH and get him to take me to a&e.

OP posts:
FrasierCraneDay · 11/08/2022 00:53

It wasn't me, it was a very dear friend of mine. A similar experience, she described it as being like having a colonoscopy with a rounders bat that had a knife attached Shock I know she did see a gp soon afterwards but I don't know if she did go to a and e.
If you are in a lot of pain I would go, as much of a faff it is it would be handy for you to have the injuries noted. Plus extra pain relief if possible Flowers

thesootherfairy · 11/08/2022 00:56

Words fail me.
If only I had stuck to my guns and left.
What a nightmare.

mathanxiety · 11/08/2022 01:04

Please go to A&E. The nurse could have perforated your intestines.
