Is there a flu bug going round that isn’t Covid?

My DS came home from his holiday and started with flu symptoms (coughing, sore throat, body aches, nausea etc) so I assumed he had picked up Covid on the plane. He has taken several tests which are all negative.
Now my DH has started with the same symptoms and is feeling very unwell but again his Covid tests are negative so far.
Has anyone else had a bug like this?

There are always non-Covid respiratory illnesses going around.

tonystarksrighthand · 08/08/2022 10:20

There are other virus's other than Covid.

pictish · 08/08/2022 10:22

Of course there is.

dustybluebell · 08/08/2022 10:23

Yes there must be. We were away, and my eldest son had it for 2/3 days while on holiday, then my younger son had it when we got home, and now me. I'm still in bed feeling dreadful, but a little better than I felt yesterday.
No appetite, sore throat, slightly raised temperature, heavy head and aches. Not nice.

All other viruses and infections didn’t retire because a new one arrived on the scene. I am not sure why people have forgotten we got ill before covid.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 08/08/2022 10:31

Yes. The common cold or the flu. Those are two just off the top of my head. 🙄

LindaEllen · 08/08/2022 10:34

Thousands. Of course there are. Why wouldn't there be? There always have been.

JustSmallFry · 08/08/2022 10:45

Yes, but I had symptoms for 4 days before getting a positive result, so a negative test doesn't mean it isn't Covid

pinkchampagne1 · 08/08/2022 10:56

I know these other bugs still go around, I was just wondering if there was something doing the rounds now. I guess we always assume every cold/flu type thing is Covid these days, when obviously all the other bugs are still about. I also naively associated flu with winter.
My poor DH has just started his 2 week holiday from work. Not a great start! 😐

DH has just tested positive so seems it was Covid! 😬

Hope he feels better soon OP

Those home kits aren’t very reliable, you need a lot of covid built up for them to be positive, so I think it’s safe to assume most things are covid. The test usually confirms it 4/5 days later.

Nasal swab home test kits are like 50% accurate i heard… might as well just flip a coin.

pinkchampagne1 · 08/08/2022 15:28

My DS is still testing negative 5 days later which surprises me as he has all the same kind of symptoms as DH and has been coughing until he is sick.
DH is feeling very poorly and sorry for himself. He has lost all his appetite which is very unlike him. I am guessing I will follow in the next few days as we had been sharing glasses etc. 😐

pinkchampagne1 · 15/10/2022 18:06

Oh no, I hope you escape it!
By some miracle I didn’t catch Covid from my DH despite us sleeping in the same bed the whole time he was ill!

Could it be a new covid strain that the old LFT are not detecting?

I was coming on here to say just that. Why do people think Covid is the only respiratory virus around now?
