Sural neuritis pain in foot

After a bad ankle sprain some years ago, I now suffer with nerve pain along outside of foot for last 18 months. Like electric shock pains, usually worse at night. I'm getting insoles made but anyone had this and how did you get rid or improve this. Be happy to hear your experiences.

Need to see a foot and ankle surgeon in person.

It may not be nerve pain - could be related to ankle instability or peroneal tendons.

If it does turn out to be nerve pain without any mechanical issue, it's likely to be trial of neuropathic pain therapies, final step would be a neurectomy, but many people dislike the numb patch almost as much as the pain...

I have this, with no cause discovered. I was given gabapentin which helps with the pain, was referred to a neurologist, had electrical conduction test and that's it - they didn't investigate to find a cause, and don't seem to expect it to get better either.
