Can’t hear properly - blocked Eustachian tubes

I wonder if anyone has any miraculous cures for blocked ears - not ear wax - blocked Eustachian tubes.

I have had a chronic respiratory illness since Easter. Since taking a flight last week my ears have been completely blocked. I can’t hear normal conversation and have to work from home as it’s embarrassing at work - I can take part in tel calls etc but have to use a high volume which I am worried will cause more damage.

The GP advised steroid nasal spray and anti histamine which I have tried for 3 days now with no effect.

I have booked an acupuncture session in a couple of days in the hope it will provide a cure.

I am worried I will stay like this forever. Does anyone have any experience of cures for this? Should I be referred to ENT now. I am experiencing a significant heating loss.

Thanks

Oh no! That's absolutely awful, so rude and nasty! I really don't blame you for changing practices. I think DH might have been fobbed off there, maybe complain to the Dr who runs the practice, unless it's several owning it together. I wonder if PALS can help? Anyway, good luck with getting better, ear problems are damn miserable & mentally exhausting at times.

Just an update. I can hear!!!

I was so desperate, I shelled out £99 on a device called an Ear Popper which is like the Otovent on steroids! It is basically a small machine that blows air up your nose, when you swallow, the ears pop. I unblocked both ears within a couple of minutes.

I think I might need to use it for a while as my nasal drip is ongoing, but so happy to have finally found something that works!! I can hear people talking again!

Thanks again everyone for sharing your experiences and all the advice.

Very pleased for you. It sounds like money well spent. Sadly for me, nothing for me worked except for a pair of really good hearing aids but I really understand the feeling of not being able to hear and the relief and joy of being able to hear again.

I've struggled with this one and off for years, since having flu. It was suggested that I'd need grommets to sort it out properly. Get a referral to ENT now but be warned, the waiting lists are LONG right now, you'll be lucky to be seen before 2024. Go private if it's really an issue.
