I have an earache!

Do I just take painkillers? Will it just go away or is it a sign of an ear infection? Will I need antibs (hope not)?

Haven't had an earache for YEARS.

ooh, earache is horrible isn't it?

It can also be as a result of a problem tooth so not necessarily an ear infection.

BettySpaghetti · 17/01/2008 12:16

sorry, meant to add I would take pinkillers and see how it goes, if it improves. If not go to GP

Oooh, sympathies, I've had an ear ache for a couple of days along with a sore throat which comes and goes.

My sympathy goes out to you. At the weekend I started with earache and the pain got so bad I had to go to the hospital at midnight - they gave me antibiotics and cortisone and a strong painkiller. The pain did get abit better when the ear sort of felt like it was bursting then loads of fluid came out.
The doctor told me to keep holding my nose and blowing to keep the passages free to the ears and to use a nose spray so if you've had a blocked nose that also might help and warmth, I found my warm cherry stone cushion helped. I'm just recovering from it now.

Thanks all.

If I open my mouth wide it also hurts the top of my throat on that side.

admylin - sounds painful! What is a cherry stone cushion?

It's just a cushion cover filled with cherry stones and you can warm it in the microwave. Bought it in a German health store thing and is great for sore necks, tummy aches etc instead of faffing about getting a hot water botle ready!

Buda, that's exactly how mine started, with the pain at that side when I opened my mouth, it's gone now though. I wonder if we should be off to the dentist in the near future?

Buda · 17/01/2008 12:30

Am scared now admylin! I hope it's not what you had. I have one of those gel packs that you can heat up so I will try that.

Made an appointment at the dentist this morning co-incidentally but it's not for another 2 weeks.

Try a decongestant too.
