6 week check-up: was expecting something different.

I've just had my week checkup with my GP after having my DS at the end of November. I was a bit confused at the appointment because I thought it was meant to be an oppotunity to check us both over.

She asked me about PND and contraception, but didn't examine DS. She asked about stiches, but I was actually expecting her to examine me. not sure why, but I left feeling like it was a total waste of time..

Did I have wrong expectations of this, or is this how things are normally done?

thanks

That's about what happened at mine as well. Pretty standard, I think.

saadia · 16/01/2008 16:51

That's what happened with me, did you have a caesarian?

kekouan · 16/01/2008 17:13

No, normal birth.

For some reason I thought it was a check-up for both of us.

I guess that because you're advised to wait until after their 6-week check to have sex that there would be an examination to make sure everything is OK, and in working order, if you know what I mean.

Hmm.. threw me a bit and ended up forgetting to ask her about a couple of things.

yikes, the thought of anyone poking around down there a mere 6 weeks after i'd given birth makes me cringe!

Lucy10 · 16/01/2008 17:17

My six week check was just for me and had to take DD for her own. But I did get my stitches checked!

crokky · 16/01/2008 17:17

At my 6 week check, they didn't look at my DS, just asked if I had any PND. No examination or anything, that was it!

cmotdibbler · 16/01/2008 19:50

I felt it was a waste of time for me - DS did get a thorough examination, but I didn't even get asked about PND. In fact I don't think that anyone asked about it at all ever.

StripeyMamaSpanx · 16/01/2008 19:51

I didn't go

Wilkie · 16/01/2008 19:52

God, they don't even bother with the 6 week check up for mothers at our surgery!

Seona1973 · 16/01/2008 19:55

there is normally a 6 week check for both of you but at different times e.g. I had to make my own appointment for mine but ds's was sent out to me. I never got stitches checked at mine either but they did ask about them.

sherby · 16/01/2008 20:01

Well DS was checked over at our 6 week check, stripped down to nappy and she checked all his reflexes, testes descended, muscle tone, spine, head shape, eyes, listened to his heart and chest, startle reflex etc etc.

She asked me about PND, breastfeeding, we had a general chat about how I was getting on tiredness, hormones we talked about birth control and then we talked about his jab schedule and 7mth check up. Oh and she checked that my uterus had gone right down.

Was there anything you wanted her to ask or check?

kathryn77 · 16/01/2008 20:06

My six month check was about me and ds. No examination for me but DS was checkd over like sherby said.
ours ws very thorough.

kekouan · 17/01/2008 09:27

Mine was the same as sherby's. I got a smear done at the same time too.

hobbsy · 17/01/2008 10:33

my ds was checked over same as sherby's. my check was nothing to write home about, male doctor who seemed very embarressed talking about my 'under carriage!!' having suffered with pre eclampsia i did expect something more thorough but hey ho....
