Feel like something stuck in my throat

Last night just before I went to bed, I started feeling as though there was something stuck in my throat, even though there is nothing there. It is like a constant feeling of pressure, which makes me feel like I want to be sick. I’ve had it once before towards the end of last year, when it last a few days and did cause me to be sick at least one night.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be please, and how to relieve it?

Crap answer sorry but i'd honestly call the GP to have a look at this today.

Beggingforsleep · 27/06/2022 07:04

Is it globus sensation? I get it on and off when I’m very tired or stressed. It’s awful but it does go. The first time I had it for about three weeks but since then it’s just a few days at a time.

You need to see a GP sharpish to rule out the serious things.

thewaitislong · 27/06/2022 07:09

I used to have this a few years ago. GP said it was acid reflux. Being careful with what I ate and Gaviscon helped to an extent. It was also stress and anxiety which I realised it came with.
I used to be really worried about it back then, but both less stress and Gaviscon helped. Please check with a GP.

Thanks all. I did wonder if it was acid reflux last time but can’t remember how much Gaviscon helped it. I am burping a little this morning too, which isn’t normal for me, but would make sense if it’s heartburn/reflux.
The globus sensation thing is really interesting too.
I’ll get some Gaviscon after work and try to get a GP appointment

My friend gets this after eating wheat based products. She said its globus.

SeaToSki · 27/06/2022 08:30

Get ot check by the GP, but it is likely to be reflux. 2 weeks of gaviscon will help if that is the problem. A couple of days is not enough to calm it down

Thank you for letting me know it needs to be a couple of weeks Gaviscon. I wasn’t aware of that.

I’ll try to start tracking what I’ve eaten when it happens too

I had this. Went to doc - was anxiety. Comes and goes now but I recognise it when it happens. You should still get it checked out though.

BalanceNotSymmetry · 27/06/2022 08:47

I’m on Sertaline for anxiety already to be fair.
I’m trying to get a GP appointment now. Out of interest as I’m bored on hold, what will they do/check/ask at the appointment to see what it is?

I had a throat x-ray.

Dita73 · 28/06/2022 00:39

Globus Hystericus. It’s awful. I’ve had it and it really does feel like there’s something in your throat. Once I found out it was fairly common I didn’t get it anywhere near as much. Another one of anxiety’s joyous symptoms

yepmetooo · 28/06/2022 01:17

I had camera down throat. But my mum did die of lung and oesophageal cancer so maybe gp was being cautious. Diagnosis reflux. I found it eased when I ate but got worse after. Btw if you are offered camera, take my advise have sedation

AuntTwacky · 28/06/2022 01:30

I have has this before and in the end put it down to anxiety, it did pass

Cakemamma19 · 28/06/2022 01:31

O have anxiety and get this 1 or two times a year. When my anxiety is bad. First time I had it I thought I had throat cancer and it really affected me. It lasted weeks now I know how common it is and it's harmless I just let it do it'd thing, and it goes away after a few days usually x

I have had this too. I was due to have an endoscopy because of it. I couldn’t tolerate the tube being out down my throat so walked out. I worked out it was eating bread that caused it.

BalanceNotSymmetry · 28/06/2022 08:16

Thanks all. It’s not as bad today. I spoke to the pharmacist last night as it’s over a week’s wait for a doctors appointment. Pharmacist suggested some esomeprazole tablets for a week and to track what I eat, even if it’s just when it flares up next to try to see if there’s something specific causing it, as that’s what the doctor is likely to suggest to begin with anyway.

I would have assumed it’s related to anxiety but the couple of times it’s happened so far haven’t been when my anxiety has been at it’s worst, just on regular days, so I’m guessing it’s maybe something I eat occasionally
