So ive been having very dark stools that look almost black, not tarry or loose, its either that with a mix of normal shades and sometimes a dark green, not changed my diet apart from ive been eating more fibre. Im 22 years old btw, i took a FOBT and i could swear i see the faintest line ever on the test line. My partner says he cant see it but I think its very very faint, what do you guys think? Ive ordered another one and ill re do it just to make sure but i dont know if its obvious enough to be a true positive? Please help i feel like im going crazy

Do you really mean occult?

Footle · 25/06/2022 06:37

@Yodaisawally , yes she does. It means hard to detect.

When positive it will be really clear.
That's a negative test.
Are you taking supplements? A tonic or iron in any form? That would also give dark stool.

If you feel unwell or black stool continues for a couple of weeks unaffected by diet and hydration, see your GP. In the interim don't worry (easier said than done I know).

I agree. That’s a negative. If you have concerns, as above, I’d speak to your GP about a faecal immunochemical test, they are much more reliable at detecting blood on the stool than a FOBT, and more accurate overall. As the PP says, taking iron supplements can cause dark stool, but if you’re feeling unwell, it’s a GP call, as they can get a more complete picture by doing appropriate bloods test to determine if you need any further tests.

Get a FIT test organised through your GP as pp suggested. Where did you get this FOBT from?

Update- i did another test and it was the same as before not a visable line although it looks like i can faintly see something thats a slightly grey line so to speak but not visable enough for someone to even call it a 'weak line'. Also when i went to the bathroom it was normal in colour again so i think that means im okay? My partner said that the higher the blood amount the more visable the line is and on the instructions it also says the intensity of the colour will vary depending on the concentration of blood, so basically saying the more blood there is the more visable the line will appear. My partner said that if i had serious GI bleeding then the line would be much more visable or at least faint enough to be certain of it being a positive. Maybe if it did pick up anything it would be from a miniscule amount from a fissure or something. Im still booked in for the doctors in 2 weeks time but im feeling more hopeful of it being nothing or at least nothing serious
