Jesus Christ have I got bunions?!

My feet have been like this for a long time. And I apologise for the photo.

No pain whatsoever. I only ever wear trainers - never anything else. These vary from All Birds, Nike and Veja to Air & Grace and Golden Goose. But all 'sensible' trainers - plenty of room etc and never tight

So .. can you have bunions for no bloody reason whatsoever? And zero pain?

They look worse in real life I think

@Lawal hmm I'm not sure tbh! My mum is no longer here but I know she didn't have them

Bunions are painful all the time. Especially if you wear trainers. 🤷🏻‍♀️ as long as you wear comfortable shoes, that cover your foot well, not too high, not too stiff..... then you should be fine 😉

flippish · 20/06/2022 10:21

@grey12 never had any pain at all. So maybe it's just that I have weird shaped feet!

Bunions aren't always painful. But when they are, it's generally due to footwear compressing the medial prominence.

Square toe-box, wide fitting shoes are what is generally needed. NEVER let a surgeon or podiatrist anywhere near them with a knife if they don't hurt enough to make your life a misery.

RandomMess · 20/06/2022 10:29

I've had bunions since teens. They aren't particularly obvious but the pain can be horrific or not at all and it's impossible to work out why tbh. Not related to footwear or how much I've walked etc 🤷🏽‍♀️

Finding shoes to fit my ver wide feet that don't dig into the top of it is tricky though Sad

Pardon the pun but bunions run in the family . You don't have to be wearing heels for them to develop but if you do it will certainly exacerbate the condition.
And yes you so have bunions

Sorry I didn't write properly 😅 I meant they don't hurt all the time!!! Inused to get a lot of pain but haven't worn heels in a few years and haven't had any pain at all

I have a non painful bunion on 1 foot. As others have said, it’s not always because of tight shoes, mine is partially due to heredity and partially because I over pronate when walking

BloodyHellKen · 20/06/2022 10:40

Hi OP,
Definitely bunions I'm afraid.

I also have a bunion on my left foot, definitely hereditary in my case. I don't get pain from mine either unless I am hiking on uneven ground then I get a bit of discomfort which soon goes. I used to get more pain about 30 years ago when I did a job that required lots of standing/walking but now no pain and it hasn't got any worse in that time.

I am not a fan of the high heel, although I have worn them occasionally I'm more of a comfortable shoe sort of woman so maybe that has helped.

Also a good supportive insole (ie not a flat insole) can help as it supports your foot arch and encourages you to put more weight on the outside of your foot when you walk and not the bunion. I've put these in my hiking boots and they really help.

My sisters are terrible but she is on her feet all day.

EBearhug · 20/06/2022 10:43

I have bunions. My mother and aunt had bunions, so I know who to blame. 😀Mine are currently okay - I can walk miles, and the reason I don't run more is not down to bunions... I've always preferred bare feet and avoided heels, so I haven't exacerbated them with footwear. The doctor has seen them when I was there for other reasons, but said if they're not causing discomfort so far, then they're not going to do anything.

devildeepbluesea · 20/06/2022 10:46

I have a huge, relatively non painful bunion. It only really hurts in the cold weather. I’d say that you do look as if you might have them. They’re not a patch on mine though 😂

flippish · 20/06/2022 11:09

Well this is disappointing! I was just loading the dishwasher yesterday and thought ' could that be bunions?!' but I thought they had to be painful!

Never had even minor discomfort and I can run and do everything without thinking about it. I don't have wide feet and my trainers always fit well and are comfortable.

Ugh

@flippish honestly OP, I wouldn't worry about it.

Lots of people have bunions and many of those people are like you and I and have no/little discomfort. I first noticed I had one in my early twenties and it's not got noticeably larger in the last 30 years. I suspect my teenage daughter has the beginnings. I tell her we're 'bunion buddies' which she doesn't appreciate😂
