I always smell and he's finally told me.

Partner of 4 years has told me I smell. He said it in a polite way, as if trying to help me.

I'm 26 and tbh I've always known I sweat a lot under my arms but his comment has hit home that other people probably think I smell too.

I work in an office and I often find that 10 minutes into put on a work top, I have sweat patches under my arms and I smell; even if I wear a black blouse, I'm uncomfortable as the armpit area is absolutely soaked through even though nobody else can see it through the black.

I finally hit breaking point today wearing a pink sleeveless shirt as it was hot. I thought since it was sleeveless that there was no way sweat patches would occur. I was wrong. After driving to work and going to the staff toilet first thing in the morning, I lifted my arms up to see sweat on the material just under the armpits.

I've also resorted to regularly using work toilet soap to wash under my arms every 2 hours; I still smell. Nobody has told me I smell, but I can smell myself so I try not to stand too close to people.

Anyway, I got home and just told my boyfriend that I think I sweat more than average and he agreed and said he's noticed I've smelt for years. I'm mortified since if he's noticed then probably everyone in work thinks I smell.

I'm fit, go on lots of walks, vegetarian, so I don't understand why I sweat so much?

I've ordered Odaban spray from Amazon and hoping it'll stop the sweat, even if it burns the armpit, I'd rather that than excess sweat.

Any other tips to get me through the next 2 days at work without sweaty armpit stains though? It's not due to arrive until Friday.

Everyone OP checked out of this thread a couple of pages in, back in June.

I don't think she's needing a few more people to tell her to use Driclor and natural fibres.

Get the mitchum in the meantime?

I had this issue as a teenager - Mitchum has never let me down

A friend of mine had a similar problem and swore by Mitchum.

I have also heard that Botox in the underarm area is very effective - but of course, has to be repeated regularly.

ClottedCreamAndStrawberries · 12/09/2022 08:56

Don’t people have Botox injections in their armpits for excess sweating?

DillDanding · 12/09/2022 09:06

That level of sweating is not normal. I’d see your GP. There are things that can be done above strong deodorant.

I can't imagine it'd be a fungal infection as I remember even in high school, we had a blue tshirt as uniform and I'd keep my jumper on as sweat patches would always form on the blue tshirt;

I haven't been to GP yet as my boyfriend and family think I'm just not using the antiperspirant spray properly or I'm not putting enough on but if these stronger sprays don't work, I'll definitely be booking an appointment, it's starting to stress me out too much, especially at work

Stop waiting and instead make a GP appt asap. What you describe is hyperhidrosis and has nothing to do with how you're using anti-perspirant.

I don't understand why you're so passive about this. There are things you can do TODAY (such as buy some Mitchum and make a GP appt).

Driclor overnight is effective but I find it irritated my skin and once that happened, it became unusable as it hurt like hell. Worth a try.

As an interim help, you can buy disposable sweat pads for under your arms. They're a bit like tiny panty liners:

smile.amazon.co.uk/GingerUP-Underarm-Sweat-Pads-Disposable/dp/B07V6SZ6WP/ref=sr_1_3_sspa?crid=3VYGN10UCP5ZY&keywords=underarm+sweat+pads&qid=1662969750&sprefix=underarm+%2Caps%2C98&sr=8-3-spons&psc=1

Fresh sweat doesn't smell but stale sweat does. So you need to be scrupulous about hygiene as well as washing your clothes at a high temp. Check if the armpits smell before putting any clean clothes on in case the sweat smell lingers (which can be common with man-made fabrics).

Iamthewalnut · 12/09/2022 09:12

I agree, it sounds like hyperhidrosis. My friend had this, only it was her hands that were excessively sweaty. I remember shopping with her in Boots and her hands were sweating so much the till assistant thought the shampoo she was buying was leaking. She eventually went to the GP and the issue was treated with Botox injections.

Choccyp1g · 12/09/2022 09:18

Try men's anti-perspirant. Gillette clear gel is the only one that has ever stopped me actually sweating.

Confusedmama2 · 12/09/2022 09:33

I sweat a lot too, even when it’s freezing outside. Odaban didn’t work for me but the best deodorant I’ve found that works is Sure, it’s the cream deodorant. It does stain though and is a little more expensive then regular deodorant. Hope you find something that works for you, it made me very anxious constantly sweating and being smelly.

LiveInSunshine · 12/09/2022 09:35

The only thing I can add to advice is NEVER wear synthetic tops. Natural cotton, not too tight. As soon as I wear polyester etc I have this issue.
Use a disabled toilet to wash under your arms during the day and reapply. Spare top if that’s useful. Wear layers to remove as soon as you are hot.
See the GP if the new product doesn’t work

LiveInSunshine · 12/09/2022 09:39

I also found sure cream really good

My DD swears a lot and uses Mitchum but agree with the others, if washing with a bar of soap and using Mitchum doesn't help them your GP can.

In his mouth 😱🤣🤣🤷🏼‍♀️

Opaljewel · 12/09/2022 09:43

Hyperhidrosis is a condition. They do botox to freeze the sweat glands un layman's terms. Your gp can refer you. It's an NHS treatment..

SunSparkle · 12/09/2022 09:46

Try something like driclor to help with the sweating but you need to get rid of the bacteria that cause the smell. Sometimes you can’t get it out of clothes but you can try by using laundry antibac and washing on a hot wash. Sometimes you need to buy new clothes.

try washing your armpits with something like hibiscrub and also using glycolic acid pads to swipe under your pits before deoderant goes on.

Thoughtful2355 · 12/09/2022 09:52

my friend did the injection thing under arms and it worked well

BigHoots · 12/09/2022 09:56

I had this problem when I was younger.

Mitchum was good but ultimately it was Driclor that finally sorted it.

baroqueandblue · 12/09/2022 09:59

Not got time to read the full thread so apologies if this has been mentioned. I discovered what I put in my body changes how my sweat smells, and it might be the case for some others too. Daily medication (anti depressants was one example) definitely altered the smell of my perspiration, and curry powder. Those are two I can definitely remember. Stopped using them and the smell of my sweat was much cleaner. Worth playing around with to see if it helps. I took activated charcoal for a while and that had a neutralising effect.

You can get Mitchum in most chemists for about £3. You could get some today to tide you over?

Yes because the last post was 3 months ago, therefore it's a dead thread.

goldfinchonthelawn · 12/09/2022 10:44

I would wear blouses and shirts that are loose cut under the armpits. If I wear close fitting blouses I start to notice a smell. Let your armpits have a bit of air circulating. Even if it's a sleeveless top, make sure it's not tight fitting under the arms. Don't know why it makes a difference but it does.

A good short term trick is alcohol-based spray. Wipe underarms with mouth wash Grin or one of those Turkish lemon cologne sprays. The alcohol in them kills the bacteria that smell.

Fififelix · 12/09/2022 10:48

I have the same thing it's my medication I use sure maximum protection which is 96 hours and it's stopped all the sweating apart from exercise. It's costs £5 try it you apply it at night after shower.
