I always smell and he's finally told me.

Partner of 4 years has told me I smell. He said it in a polite way, as if trying to help me.

I'm 26 and tbh I've always known I sweat a lot under my arms but his comment has hit home that other people probably think I smell too.

I work in an office and I often find that 10 minutes into put on a work top, I have sweat patches under my arms and I smell; even if I wear a black blouse, I'm uncomfortable as the armpit area is absolutely soaked through even though nobody else can see it through the black.

I finally hit breaking point today wearing a pink sleeveless shirt as it was hot. I thought since it was sleeveless that there was no way sweat patches would occur. I was wrong. After driving to work and going to the staff toilet first thing in the morning, I lifted my arms up to see sweat on the material just under the armpits.

I've also resorted to regularly using work toilet soap to wash under my arms every 2 hours; I still smell. Nobody has told me I smell, but I can smell myself so I try not to stand too close to people.

Anyway, I got home and just told my boyfriend that I think I sweat more than average and he agreed and said he's noticed I've smelt for years. I'm mortified since if he's noticed then probably everyone in work thinks I smell.

I'm fit, go on lots of walks, vegetarian, so I don't understand why I sweat so much?

I've ordered Odaban spray from Amazon and hoping it'll stop the sweat, even if it burns the armpit, I'd rather that than excess sweat.

Any other tips to get me through the next 2 days at work without sweaty armpit stains though? It's not due to arrive until Friday.

Supermarket do a dove, sanex, sure, 48 hour protection deodorant bar they're very effective.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 16/06/2022 07:52

I had exactly the same problem as you, OP. It was horrendous.

I used Driclor - my Christ, the first time I used it I thought my armpits were on fire. I used it again about a week later then I didn’t have to use it for months. Occasional applications over the next couple of years and the problem was gone.

I.might be chatting shit, but I'm sure I've heard that botox injections can help with excessive swearing?

Is that because it stops your mouth working?

Teateaandmoretea · 16/06/2022 07:56

OP no need to visit the GP and you’ve clearly used all the normal deodorants over the years.

Driclor is the answer. It’s brutal but I promise it will work and solve it forever. I suffered with extreme sweating through my teens and it was awful. Just make sure you read the instructions and don’t use after shaving or bath. You will still get an odd prickling sensation but it works immediately and then you can use it occasionally.

I notice you say you use a spray. They are less effective. Switch to a good roll on (I vote Mitchum too), use it generously after a shower, on any areas that sweat.

I second this. I'm not a huge fan of the smell of Mitchum but whenever I sweat more (probably hormonal?) it always sorts me out. I have also tried men's Triple Dry and got my husband to use it too when he was smelly, and it definitely worked for us. Good luck!

eacapade1982 · 16/06/2022 07:58

If your current antiperspirants aren't working then I agree with others to use a stronger one. Botox treatment could be something to explore. Sweat clearly is an issue and bacteria are feeding on it and multiplying. As well as stopping the sweat you can also try to kill the bacteria. I also tried santitser and alcohol wipes, none of which was effective for more than a few minutes. However, i have found that applying bicarbonate of soda really works! I think it creates an alkaline environment that seems to kill the bacteria or stop them multiplying. Usually apply it once per day, sometimes more if sweating a lot.

Octagoneaway · 16/06/2022 07:58

Another vote from me for the Sure or Dove maximum protection sticks (they’re not a spray or roll on). I used to be always drying my tops under the hand dryers, and now no more. Worth a try OP.

I think one of my mums relatives was an overproducer of sweat or something like that and they had some procedure to counteract the problem, I'm sorry but I'm drawing a blank about the name of the condition. By all accounts, it greatly the problem.

I can only imagine what you are going through. Hugs.

Have you discussed this with your GP?

EmeraldShamrock1 · 16/06/2022 08:00

Botox is a game changer, your GP can refer you.

My sister who suffering with bladder issues is being referred for botox in her bladder.

You might have to push for it.

Teateaandmoretea · 16/06/2022 08:01

There is no need for Botox either. Driclor solves excessive sweating says all the people who have suffered from it. It’s about a fiver and you won’t get through a full bottle ever.

Teateaandmoretea · 16/06/2022 08:02

I literally in my teens used to have sweat dripping from my armpits and Driclor solved it overnight. Mitchum or and deodorant did nothing.

This has some info at the bottom about vitamin deficiencies as a cause, your diet could be key here as you aren't a meat eater

Another for Mitchum, years ago I was prescribed Driclor and it did work but my underarms burned like a 🤬
Mitchum is the only deodorant that works on me. I used to swear by Dove but I may as well not bother using any deodorant if I wear that.

butterpuffed · 16/06/2022 08:05

I had an operation for excessive sweating to remove some sweat glands under my arms . Didn't work. Then I started using Anhydrol Forte , brilliant , the effects last for days . Sometimes the pharmacist has to order it and tells me Driclor is the same but as I've never tried it I'd rather stick to what works for me.

TreacheryPepper · 16/06/2022 08:07

Spray deodorants are rubbish. Definitely switch to a roll on. Mitchum is the best I've found.

WeAreTheHeroes · 16/06/2022 08:07

I think you've possibly got so anxious about sweating and smelling you're making it worse. Trying using soap in the shower, drying yourself properly and using a roll on deodorant like Mitchum. I used to use Sure but once I was out of my teens it no longer kept me dry and that's a horrible feeling. Make sure you're wearing natural fibres and stop spraying perfume on your armpits! The skin must be irritated. It's stale sweat that smells so maybe you do sweat more than average, talk to your GP.

Lolojojonesi · 16/06/2022 08:07

Sorry just to repeat what EVERYONE else has said as this thread is starting to sound like an advert, but I know a GP who recommends Mitchum to patients with excessive sweating as first port of call before trying more complex/expensive options. It's available pretty much everywhere and works well.

DreamingofItaly2023 · 16/06/2022 08:08

I was the same in my teens and twenties. Mitchum didn’t touch it but Perspirex did. Seriously the stuff changed my life. I don’t need it now I am older but it enabled me to live a full life when younger rather than hide at home.

Teateaandmoretea · 16/06/2022 08:09

@WeAreTheHeroes there is definitely truth in that. But to solve it you have to stop the sweating, it’s the only way. Then it goes away and doesn’t come back as you no
longer worry. Soap won’t do that.

DreamingofItaly2023 · 16/06/2022 08:09

Oh yes Driclor also worked, just don’t apply straight after shaving!

Tippytappytoes · 16/06/2022 08:11

I like to use Perspi-Guard Odour Control Bodywash when I shower as it targets the bacteria that causes the smell, then I put salt of the earth deodorant on straight after.

JustDanceAddict · 16/06/2022 08:12

I concur re Mitchum, but probably not enough for the amount you’re producing. Hope you can find a solution.

debbrianna · 16/06/2022 08:14

If you are big breasted, make sure to put deodorant under your boobs. Never wear a bra twice

I should have added that lots of posters who have recommended Mitchum....I'm not sure this works if you have actually been diagnosed with hyperhidrosis. I tried Mitchum and it had no effect.

Yodaisawally · 16/06/2022 08:15

I suffered with excessive sweating all through school until I discovered Driclor. You need to treat the swearing to stop the smelling...

I use it once every couple of weeks now, that's all I need to keep it under control. No swearing at all.
