I always smell and he's finally told me.

Partner of 4 years has told me I smell. He said it in a polite way, as if trying to help me.

I'm 26 and tbh I've always known I sweat a lot under my arms but his comment has hit home that other people probably think I smell too.

I work in an office and I often find that 10 minutes into put on a work top, I have sweat patches under my arms and I smell; even if I wear a black blouse, I'm uncomfortable as the armpit area is absolutely soaked through even though nobody else can see it through the black.

I finally hit breaking point today wearing a pink sleeveless shirt as it was hot. I thought since it was sleeveless that there was no way sweat patches would occur. I was wrong. After driving to work and going to the staff toilet first thing in the morning, I lifted my arms up to see sweat on the material just under the armpits.

I've also resorted to regularly using work toilet soap to wash under my arms every 2 hours; I still smell. Nobody has told me I smell, but I can smell myself so I try not to stand too close to people.

Anyway, I got home and just told my boyfriend that I think I sweat more than average and he agreed and said he's noticed I've smelt for years. I'm mortified since if he's noticed then probably everyone in work thinks I smell.

I'm fit, go on lots of walks, vegetarian, so I don't understand why I sweat so much?

I've ordered Odaban spray from Amazon and hoping it'll stop the sweat, even if it burns the armpit, I'd rather that than excess sweat.

Any other tips to get me through the next 2 days at work without sweaty armpit stains though? It's not due to arrive until Friday.

I agree with other posters, Mitchum is brilliant. I feel for you, my teenage years were rubbish because I had excessive sweating. My GP did offer me an option of Botox on the nerves to stop it but I was put off by potential facial palsy as the nerves are close to facial nerves

ShakespearesSisters · 16/06/2022 07:17

Another vote for Driclor. Have a shower before bed, dry off then apply. It says it works best when you are likely to sweat less. I use it just once every few months now.
Randomly I trialled Wild deodorant (trying to be eco friendly) was concerned as isn't an antiperspirant but I was amazed. I used to have damp patches under my arms all the time with my normal "strong" roll on. I dont get them with this. Was quiet shocked.
Good luck.

Oh, some stupid hack I saw but never tried is to use a pantyliner, so stick it the armpit area of your top. Absorbs the moisture. Will probably be visible as its stuck depending on the fabric of your top though.

I had this issue as a teenager - Mitchum has never let me down

Another one for Mitchum over here. The best deodorant I've ever used. Get the clinical one, not the cheaper version.

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/06/2022 07:20

Mitchum didn’t work for me but triple dry for men applied morning and evening did.

liveforsummer · 16/06/2022 07:22

Mitchum is ok but dryclor or perspired is a level up and will stop the sweating completely. You only need to use it every few days after initial treatment.

astoundedgoat · 15/06/2022 22:36

I also had this until I was about 20 for some reason. Mitchum is great. The stuff that burns is fine for the first week - and magic - but if it’s the stuff I tried, the burning was intolerable.

The trick is not to put it on with the applicator. I found if I rolled it on it was agony but applies sparingly dabbed on with cotton wool and you didn't get the burn. Your skin then gets used to it over time too so no reaction at all

fyn · 16/06/2022 07:24

Mitchum is also the only thing that works for me!

Treacletoots · 16/06/2022 07:26

Sweat doesn't smell. It's the chemicals in your deodorant that make it smell as your body is trying to expel them. Try using a natural deodorant, I haven't used regular antiperspirant for years and definitely don't smell. DD and DH wouldn't be shy if I did!

Luminousnose · 16/06/2022 07:27

Re the Mitchum, there’s a cream one that I think is called Ultimate. It comes in a box and they sell it in Sainsbury’s. It’s even more effective than the stick one. I don’t generally sweat much these days (post menopause), but did find that I sweated (and it smelt) much more for about three months after having Covid. The Mitchum Ultimate worked a treat.

Yafilthyanimal · 16/06/2022 07:27

Order some DRICLOR.

It's amazing And the only thing that has stopped my excessive sweating.

Bunnygirl0 · 16/06/2022 07:28

Go and buy some Mitchum today and use it still when the other stuff comes. I don’t smell but I’ve noticed I’m SO much fresher with Mitchum. Why wait. Go and get Mitchum today

Bunnygirl0 · 16/06/2022 07:29

I also used driclor as a teen and I think it really sorted me out so I don’t sweat loads now and I don’t use it still

mowglika · 16/06/2022 07:29

Stop spraying perfume on your pits! The alcohol and other ingredients are probably putting your balance out of whack and the alcohol is drying out your skin and encouraging more sweat

Use real soap, not dove etc as they will make your pits smell more

the most important thing that got rid of my ‘stress sweat’ smell that I had in my 20s - removing hair by the roots - so waxing, lasering, tweezing. It’s the bacteria on the hair/stubble that causes the smell, if there is no hair you will not smell aS much if at all.
good luck!

Bigsighall · 16/06/2022 07:30

I know others have mentioned it but driclor works… it stings to start with but keep going. I then daily use sanex 48 hour with the blue top. This combo is very effective. I was exactly like you.

Devonclan · 16/06/2022 07:30

I was like this early 20s. Went to the drs and he gave me some deodorant on prescription. I never sweated after that it was a revelation! You don’t have to put up with it

mowglika · 16/06/2022 07:32

Just to add driclor/Mitchum etc will help with the sweat issue but won’t always eliminate the smell completely until you get rid of the hair.

Mitchum is great though, it served me well until I got rid of my hair using lumea and never had the smell issue again

See your GP about hyperhidrosis. There are treatments available.

^ Do this.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 16/06/2022 07:34

One thing to be aware of with the Mitchum stick, which I use, is that it leaves a waxy film on the armpits of clothes which I've found is not always washed out at 30 on a quick wash! But that's solved by giving that area a quick wash with soap and hot water before putting in the machine. Bit of a faff though.

Morethanthis71 · 16/06/2022 07:36

Have you also tried washing armpits with hibiscrub, serious game changer for me. It won't stop the sweating but will remove any bacteria that might be contributing towards a smell?

ancientgran · 16/06/2022 07:38

I'm in a bit of a rush getting ready for work so haven't read the full thread so apologies if I'm repeating someone else.

Obviously it would be good to see the doctor to get some help with stopping the sweating but fresh sweat shouldn't really smell that much. I found with a smelly teenage son that the problem was even though shirts and t shirts were washed the smell reactivated as soon as the t shirt got warm. I found treating the underarm area with some white vinegar before washing stopped this.

You will still have the sweat patches but it really should help with the smell. Good luck.

KangFang · 16/06/2022 07:41

I also second Odaban, which is really similar to Perspirex.
Not sure if you can get Odaban in the shops but Perspirex is sold widely.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 16/06/2022 07:42

Awh it isn't easy telling someone who you love that they smell of BO.

My niece has an issue she brought in a spare top and flannel to work every day.

I invested in some strong roll-on deodorant from the supermarket and the issue was solved.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 16/06/2022 07:45

Echoing others fresh sweat isn't smelly.

Use an antibacterial detergent for your clothes too, pre wash armpit and crotch areas of clothes before machine washing with an antibac detergent.

Toughtimesagain · 16/06/2022 07:47

I notice you say you use a spray. They are less effective. Switch to a good roll on (I vote Mitchum too), use it generously after a shower, on any areas that sweat.

Staynow · 16/06/2022 07:49

I would really, really recommend Trust, you can get it in Boots. in a little square box. I got it after seeing it recommended on here. My teen is the stinkiest teen going and it even works on him - and it doesn't burn at all or have any other horrible effects. It doesn't stop you sweating (which is much better for your body IMO) but it stops the smell. For some people it lasts up to five days before you need to reapply as well.
