carla, you have lost me, what is PSA?

And FHX?

MummyToSteven · 23/11/2004 22:00

i think PSA is a type of antigen connected with prostate cancer - tho i don't think high levels necessary mean anything - i.e. not absolutely definitive test. is your DH having bladder symptoms investigated by his GP?

MummyToSteven · 23/11/2004 22:00

and i'm defo NOT a doctor

carla · 23/11/2004 22:06

PSA Q&A here

MummyToSteven · 23/11/2004 22:11

here's a link to some more info about PSA if you are interested Carla:-

www.cancerscreening.nhs.uk/prostate/psa-tests.html

so it looks like the PSA test is done to look for prostate problems in general, not just to test for cancer.

gtg

MummyToSteven · 23/11/2004 22:11

ooops hth not gtg -

tamum · 23/11/2004 22:13

I have never heard of prostate specific antigen being tested in urine, if that's what you mean? It only works as a blood test as far as I know. Please try not to worry

zephyrcat · 23/11/2004 22:13

FHX?

MummyToSteven · 23/11/2004 22:16

yes, just had a look at zephyrcats link and they only seem to test for PSA with a blood test (which of course your DH couldn't do at home anyway) so I may have got the completely wrong end of the stick. sorry if i have caused any unnecessary worry.

carla · 23/11/2004 22:29

MTS, you haven't at all!

Yes, as far as I know PSA is only ever done as a blood test - slightly high results often cause alarm but you only really need to worry if it's very high. Maybe the bag is to test for a urine infection? But I've only ever seen bags used for tiny babies in nappies - you stick it on until they pee, then snip the corner off and drain it into a specimen bottle - can't see your dh being very keen to do that?!

carla · 23/11/2004 23:20

jmb ... have you changed your name??
