I have some tables off the dr for sickness and I can’t keep them down I’m having a very bad morning! Can I put it in my bum and will it dissolve and go into my blood stream and work just as well?? Would ask the dr but it’s Sunday

I don’t think so. They usually use stomach acid to break down the coating.

MissNothing1991 · 22/05/2022 09:24

Highly doubt it, you can buy suppositories for that purpose. Read the patient information leaflet that came with them but highly doubt it...

Haggisfish3 · 22/05/2022 09:24

I would call 111 and ask them. They might be able to arrange an injection instead.

godmum56 · 22/05/2022 09:24

no you can't...well you can but it won't do any good.

Nikki2ol6 · 22/05/2022 09:26

Thanks everyone I really don’t want to have to go back into the hospital this would be my 5th time in 14 weeks for sever sickness

I find liquid paracetomol or ibruprofen is good

if you hold it in your mouth it is absorbed v quickly through your cheeks - take v small sips!

StickyFingeredWeeNed · 22/05/2022 09:30

Bienvenue a France! They live suppositories on the continent, just ask your pharmacist and I’m sure they can help (er… prescribe, not insert!).

greensnail · 22/05/2022 09:44

You can get ones that dissolve in your mouth - you just tuck them between your lip and your gum, or you can get suppositories. Go and see a pharmacist they will be able to advise you.

Nikki2ol6 · 22/05/2022 09:45

Ok thank you everyone I’m headed to Asda pharmacy it opens at 10am

You need to buy suppositories, you can't just put an oral tablet up your bum.

sanityisamyth · 22/05/2022 09:48

No you won't be able to. They are formulated to be used in certain places. What tablets are they?

Runningslow · 22/05/2022 09:48

I wouldn’t take ibuprofen if you’re vomiting

HoppingPavlova · 23/05/2022 11:05

If for vomiting I imagine it’s Ondansetron or similar, which come in wafers due to this exact issue. The wafer absorbs under your tongue.

Seeline · 23/05/2022 11:07

Is this for morning sickness OP?

As others have said, drugs need to be formulated differently for different routes of administration. A drug in the form of a tablet is very unlikely to be absorbed to the same extent (if at all) from your rectum compared to absorption from your small intestine.

Also, drugs absorbed from your small intestine go straight to your liver, where a proportion might be broken down. When the same drug is absorbed from your rectum only 1/3 of it goes straight to your liver, so the concentration at the site of action might be considerably higher, which is potentially dangerous. (See the famous Darwin Award winner killed by rectal administration of sherry: www.theregister.com/2008/01/14/darwin_awards_2007/)

Which drug is it? Some might be available in suppository form, or as buccal solutions. Whether pharmacies will have them in stock is another matter: you might have to wait a few days to get them.
