Health anxiety going mad, tonsil is huge

Hi! I have really bad anxiety I will go doctors but I'm still freaking out at what they will say, started with a sore throat for about a week then got a cold, cough, and one of my tonsils are huge! I'm scared and unsure if it's always been like that I used to get tonsillitis a lot too, so I'm not sure anyway. I have two swollen glands one on my neck and under chin not big though think the one on my neck is going down but the tonsil thing is scaring me any ideas what it could be to put my mind at rest before going doctors. Thankyou

Gargle with salt water 3x a day and take regular paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Do you have a temperature, how ill do you feel? What are you frightened it is? Sounds like a cold/virus to me. Did you do a covid test?

Hello, I'm not sure if I have a temp but I do feel warm and just overall drained, I googled (bad idea) says one large tonsil can be a sign of tonsil cancer x

I'm no medic but I very much doubt you have cancer much more likely to be a virus especially with a cold/ cough.

Take painkillers and see if that helps. Keep an eye on your temperature and see the GP if it doesn't go or gets worse. Keep up with salt gargles, it really helps.

It's also very common to get one tonsil bigger than the other with a virus.

I have one tonsil that "swells" and gets bigger. It's a sign that it has a massive tonsil stone that needs popping out. Grim but harmless!

I also get one large tonsil whenever I get tonsillitis. It’s really normal. It’s horrible as I can feel it resting on my tongue. Blurgh.

Anyway, the doctor will (I’ll bet my bottom dollar on it) say you have tonsillitis, likely viral of there’s no white slouchy patches, and to use Difflam throat spray, drink lots and take regular paracetamol and ibuprofen.

However, it’s worth beating in mind that tonsillitis can develop into quinsy, which is an abscess, so with you having one bigger than the other, they may want a look.

It won’t be cancer.

Thankyou so much for the replies made me feel abit better, it is quite large. Hopefully it's all good my daughter also isn't well she has the same but without the large tonsil although hers do seem a little red we both will hopefully be going doctors tomorrow it's so hard to get an appointment. She's otherwise fine got all her energy etc, she is 3 so hopefully will see her asap, Thanks again x

Think I'm worrying that it won't go down once I'm over being ill. I'm unsure if I've always had one bigger than the other, I'm overthinking it all I think.

Are you taking regular ibuprofen?

I'm at the doctors at 11:15 my 3 year old is also being seen. I've been taking paracetamol and strepsils, don't take ibrurofen because I have asthma to be safe

Just incase for anyone in this situation or anything I've been doctors it's viral, nothing to worry about and if the tonsil doesn't go down then it doesn't matter anyway so all good, plenty of fluid, rest and paracetamol, and we should be fine :)
