Pregnant /Muscle twitches and doctor scared life out of me

So I’m 13 weeks pregnant and a few weeks ago I woke to a vigorous shoulder twitch that happened every half hour or so for two days . Since then , I’ve felt twitches everywhere . Visited my doctor expecting her to say it was common and not to worry - she didn’t . Said it was highly unusual and when I asked if it was motor neurone to my horror said it could be !!!!
Anyway , she tested my reflexes all fine then concluded she would want to speak to a more senior doc and ring me back .
she did later that day and to my horror she also found it in her words strange . She suggested the doc ring neuro helpline at our local hospital . She done this and neurologist said she was reassured it wasn’t motor neurone as it doesn’t start like that and probably bfs which is apparently common in pregnancy and advised blood tests but not to worry as it’s probably that .
im just left with a bit of uncertainty now … the gps initial reaction has worried me and the fact the senior doctor who has worked there 40 years also was worried … would you be reassured ? Doctor said after bloods I can see neurologist in future if it continues .

Yes - be reassured! You have had this reassurance from the expert. They don't tend to offer the best case scenario if there is any doubt. ( it would be hard to backtrack and give you bad news if things went wrong.)

The other doctors knew this wasn't their area of knowledge-clearly your symptoms are not common- so asked a specialist.

What a frightening time this has been for you though. Hope you are feeling better and that everything else goes well. Flowers

Aaah Thankyou for this . Much appreciated :)

I get muscle twitches, it’s not MND. GPs always seem to go for the worst scenario. Be reassured by consultant.

Moppincraxy · 02/05/2022 21:25

I've had this before and it was all caused by stress and anxiety. It has probably ramped up because you started worrying about one twitch and that made more twitches happen.

Foreverbaffled · 02/05/2022 21:39

MND doesn’t start with widespread muscle twitching, it tends to focus on one area at a time which deteriorated before moving to the next. So pleased be totally reassured it’s not that! Also if your reflexes are fine that’s great too.

Lkakpk · 02/05/2022 22:22

@Katya213 How often do you get yours ? I know it just worried me so much . Especially because my shoulder ( original twitch ) has a constant buzzing sensation now but from reading that’s not really motor neurone symptom it’s more about lack of sensation

@Moppincraxy how long did it last for you ?

OP posts:
Lkakpk · 02/05/2022 22:24

@Foreverbaffled yes consultant told gp it wouldn’t be so acute to start . What does worry me is yes , I do now have twitches everywhere but concerns me it’s still most significant in shoulder area along with a weird buzzing /vibrating sensation . So strange !

Until I started taking anxiety medication! I was also getting the buzzing and vibrating internally. It comes back mildly when I'm under particular stress.

Katya213 · 02/05/2022 23:44

OP I have your symptoms, the buzzing, vibration, twitches, I’ve had it for two years, been seen by neurologist, they say it’s nothing but the more I worry the worse it gets.

Lkakpk · 02/05/2022 23:48

This would make sense . I’ve been under stress with this pregnancy due to a loss last year and I am a complete over thinker so it all adds up

@Katya213 Where did your twitching start . How weird is the buzzing /vibrating it’s the weirdest sensation . Is it in a particular place for you ?

I'm sorry to hear this OP, how worrying for you. If it helps, I also get muscle twitching, especially when I'm tired. It was so bad in one leg during pregnancy that you could see it moving under my skin. It's never progressed into anything worse- it just happens when I'm sleep-deprived or getting low-quality sleep, so now I've noticed the pattern I don't really worry about it.

Katya213 · 03/05/2022 00:10

Mine started in my right calf, it then progressed to my chest and down my arm and into my face. I was petrified as I’d never experienced anything like it. Neurologist says it’s all anxiety. I’ve had tests that came back normal. Please take reassurance from the neurologist.

Lkakpk · 03/05/2022 11:16

Thankyou . Apparently it’s common in pregnancy

@Katya213 do you think I should arrange to see neurologist ? Neurologist bacially got overview of my symptoms on phone with my gp

Katya213 · 03/05/2022 11:28

NO, you are fine! If they thought you weren’t they would’ve definitely had you in.

Lkakpk · 03/05/2022 13:09

@Katya213 thanks for reassurance ! And nice to see someone been through same !
