My dad has stomach cancer and had problems with his small intestine. He had surgery on Monday and he got an ileostomy. (a plastic bag that is on the outside of his stomach that is connected with the small intestine.) We have been to the hospital and he is in alot of pain and is very confuse. This is his third day and he looks worst than yesterday. Is this normal?

no its not normal

have you asked the nurse?

mommydear · 09/01/2008 12:37

Yes. She said it is the morhine that makes him so confuse and the third day is usualy the worst after a big operation. The thing is, he had surgery 1 October 2007 when they found out that he has cancer but he didn't look this bad.

ask to speak to his consultant - and keep asking until you understand what is happening (and they take some notice!)

morphine

shouldnt make you confused if you are having the right dosage. if the nurses think he is confused with morphine, they should be doing 2 things- finding an alternative, and not giving him so much

pain

there are thousands of alternatives to morphine

pain and confusion

he could have an infection, which gives you both the above

3rd day is worst of all? yes that could be the case with some people but its not a known fact

speak to a doctor and the nurse in charge (not of his care but of the ward)

good luck
