Endoscopy without conscious sedation?

I can choose between conscious sedation which I don't want or a numbing spray in mouth and throat - has anyone opted for the latter and if so, any comments or advice please? I want to be able to drive myself home which I can with the numbing spray and to be able to get on with my day. Many thanks

I had an endoscopy with the throat spray and it was fine. It wasn’t pleasant but it was ok.

I was talked into having only the spray by a lady in the waiting room who was going after me. She was really scared of the sedation and just wanted reassurance that the spray was going to be ok. I, somehow, found myself promising I’d do it and let her know after. The funny thing was I didn’t get taken back to the same waiting room so didn’t see her again. I did ask the nurse to let her know it was ok.

Definitely do it just to be on the safe side.

How strong is your gag reflex? I have a really strong gag reflex so its horrible for me when I get a gastroscopy. They don't even offer sedation where I am, just the throat spray and the last time I had one I panicked as it went in and almost punched the doctor in the face. So if I had the option of sedation I would definitely definitely choose it.

Everyone is different but for me sedation .The throat spray was vile - mix of banana and urine flavours .

I didn't feel sleepy afterwards and felt completely normal after about 30 mins .Didn't affect my day .Think they err on side of caution with advice about being collected etc .

I have to have the sedation because i hate people at my mouth but last time while I was under I grabbed the tube and wouldn't let go 🤣🤣 what ever they give me makes me super aggressive. I remember bits weeks later and I'm thoroughly embarrassed every time. I have to have it every 2 years for life though, so the staff know me well enough by now but I still apologise to the Dr every time 🙈🙈
