What is this - pain in right hand side of back

bubblesbubbles11 · 27/03/2022 18:58

Over the last 2-3 days I have developed quite an intense pain in the middle right hand side section of my back. It is not sharp or stabbing but it is more or less continuous, sometimes feeling more uncomfortable than other times.
The only way I can describe it is as if there is an obstruction inside - to begin with it felt a bit like being winded but now it kinda feels like there is something there because when I take a deep breath or lean forward a bit it can feel tight like there is something there which is being stretched over - it is difficult to describe.
No other sypmptoms as such and it is only on the right hand side kinda just above the bottom of my ribs and only on my back.
What do you think it is? My son has told me he thinks there is a small raised area (swelling) on the skin on my back in the area it is (but I cannot feel that with my hand.
Do you think it is a kidney stone? I have to take medication (iasibon which is basically ibadronic acid) for my bones (post cancer) to keep the calcium levels lower in my blood but i missed a few days so wondering if it might be a kidney stone caused by calcium. I just want it to go away by itself to be honest.
Any ideas?
thanks

UTI, Kidney stone or did you pull a muscle and you didn't know you did

This. It needs checking.
chillichutneysarnie · 27/03/2022 19:11

My mum has similar pain and it was a PE... Please get checked asap

Bramblesr · 27/03/2022 19:16

Could be shingles with one sided intense pain and rash.

bubblesbubbles11 · 27/03/2022 19:28

thanks so much for all the replies, I really appreciate it.

"it was a PE" - what is PE?

and in response to people who think it might be a kidney stone - do you know if they are serious and do they go away on their own? (FAOD I am seriously considering booking a GP appointment)

It was gallstones with me.

Right hand side low on rib cage, mainly in my back but if I pressed below right boob it was tender. No position alleviated it, painkillers dulled but didn't get rid of it. I felt kind of like I needed to burp, or fart, or poo or something but not really, if that makes sense.

I didn't realise it was gallstones, thought it was back pain due to sitting at a desk all day at work, went for years having these random back pain attacks at night about 3-4 times a year. Then last September it hit really really hard, I was in agony, got myself to A&E and it was an infected gallbladder. 5 nights in hospital, lots of oramorph and codeine, an emergency surgery to remove the gallbladder, 1 absolutely massive stone and now I'm fine.

Definitely worth getting it checked out.

Sorry pulmonary embolism

bubblesbubbles11 · 27/03/2022 23:13

Thank you chilli.
Hopefully it is not that - it has got worse the more tired I have got today (about to go to sleep) and both of my children have confirmed that there is a slightly raised area of skin on my back now which makes me think there is inflamation inside (I have never had a kidney stone or a gallstone needing treatment before) - I don't remember banging my back or similar so although it feels like muscle/nerve pain (a bit) there is also a sensation of obstruction. But pressing on the area does not "hurt".
Freaking out a bit now (as I have already been thro cancer so serious health conditions are my worst nightmare....

Does it feel like you've been literally stabbed in the back?

I had this, it was stress

bubblesbubbles11 · 27/03/2022 23:21

dipdye
no, it's not stabbing.

Its more like I would expect if I had been stung by some kind of venom animal but inside my body (both children have said there is no mark on the skin indicating a bite or similar) and although pressing on the skin does not give anything "firm" as such (like a discernable lump) nor does it hurt to press on the skin, when I bend over or move my arms it feels like there is some kind of mass/obstruction.
I want to deny it is there (as I did, stupidly, with my cancer) but it is definitely there and has been going for about 3 days now.
Urggghhh.
I bloody hate hospitals. I really want this to be "nothing".

sometimes twisting or breathing deeply feels kinda "uncomfortable" and tight but only in that particular area on the right hand side of my middle back.
No shortness of breath and no temperature or nausea (yet - let's hope never).

Is that the area of the liver, or is it kidneys I wonder?

Can you take a full, complete breath? And are you able to sneeze? Or is it too painful?

dipdye · 27/03/2022 23:32

In your situation I'd go get it checked out, just to be sure.

bubblesbubbles11 · 27/03/2022 23:47

dipdye - yes I can take a full complete breath, but if I twist my torso and breathe deeply at the same time it feels painful.
Its like there is something sufficiently under the skin (thinking a marble shape but obviously i have no idea as i cannot see it) but can definitely "feel" it and more so when I move, but also when I am still.

It initially felt like a sprained muscle but i have never thought of my middle back (right side) as having those kind of muscles which sprain (if there was twisting damage I imagined it to be lower down near my waist).
it is weird.
Not the kind of pain which keeps you awake, but the kind of pain/discomfort which a good nights sleep has not alieviated (so far).

Seek medical advice. On MN it will only be guesses. Hope you feel better soon.

MarmiteCoriander · 28/03/2022 00:29

Is it where the bra strap sits or lower? I'm currently have this where the bra sits, but more stabbing and tightness and like someone is squeezing the area. The osteopath said its more likely a referred pain from my neck and not actually a pain in the thoracic region! I've also read that it could be related to elevated sugar levels. Is it worse after eating sugar or carbs?

dizzydizzydizzy · 28/03/2022 07:59

Could be a tight muscle. In which case a sports massage would sort it out.

Contact your GP OP in case it's gall bladder or appendix or something.

bubblesbubbles11 · 28/03/2022 09:48

thank you everyone who has posted on this thread I am really really grateful for your replies.
I am going to see if i can get a gp appointment.

RoseBing · 25/04/2022 16:52

Hi there, did you get to the bottom of the right sided back pain? I have had the same all day. Thank you!
