Omeprazole and stomach cancer risk

I recently read on the daily Mail ( I know 🤦🏻‍♀️) that Kelis husband died of stomach cancer and he was taking PPI's to reduce stomach acid.
I take Omeprazole 10mg daily and I'm so worried about the increased risk of stomach cancer.
But then if I don't take it then I get bad acid reflux which can also lead to cancer of the oesophagus so I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't.
I'm so anxious 😕

I feel the same, taking Lansoprazole for a year and very concerned. Mine is 30 mg daily. Just not sure what to do.

It was probably the stomach acid causing cancer and not the omeprazole.
I've been on ppi since 2007 due to severe acid reflux and no doctors or consultants have ever linked ppi use with cancer. They link the effects of uncontrolled reflux with cancer.
The only concern they have raised is that prolonged use of omeprazole might lead to osteoporosis.

Please don't worry. From what I can see from a quick look, the studies that showed an increase in gastric cancer with long term ppi use showed a two fold increase, ie doubled. That can sound big but you have to put it in perspective - if your previous risk was 1in1000 it gets increased to 2in1000.

Iv been on omeprazole for 2-3 years now and had no idea!

I don’t think it’s the omeprazole causing the cancer, it’s that it can mask the symptoms meaning people seek help later than they would do.

I had also seen this when I did a quick Google

It’s not the PPI that is causing the cancer. It’s that you’re more likely to develop cancer if you have difficulties with acid and acid reflux.

My Mum had oesophageal cancer as a result of untreated acid reflux. I suffer similarly for periods of time and the GP always gives me omeprazole, says it's safe.

My dog is also currently on it!

LifesTooShortYOLO · 21/03/2022 21:44

Thus is the part of the article that worried me when it says changes consistent with ppi use 😕

My doctor asked me to reduce my dose of omeprazole by half last year with the explanation that it was being advised to all patients as omeprazole masks symptoms too well.

@Lallybroch

My doctor asked me to reduce my dose of omeprazole by half last year with the explanation that it was being advised to all patients as omeprazole masks symptoms too well.
So he didn't say anything about it causing it though? Just masking?

I'm having an endoscopy soon to find out more as Dr doesn't want me on Lanzeroperole anymore
