TMI warning - excruciating pain, can't pass stools

notsuresal · 13/03/2022 18:32

As the title says. I am severely constipated and can't seem to pass any stools whatsoever. The last time I went to the toilet was last Wednesday.. and since then I've tried numerous times and can't go. I get the feeling that I need to, but I'm in agony when I try 😟 I did also have a lot of fresh blood when trying to go earlier this morning 😓

Can anybody help? I don't feel like it's an emergency as such as I don't want to waste the NHS / A&E departments time. But this is truly horrendous 😓

What have you been taking since last Wednesday to help with the constipation? Just so you don’t get a whole load imposts suggesting things you’ve already tried.

If you have already tried loads of things you will have to ring 111.

There is an almost identical thread on here today called 'should we go to a and e' which is probably worth reading.

Elena3007 · 13/03/2022 18:39

Hi, eat dried dates and figs followed by juicy fruits. You should be able to go to the toilet pretty quickly.

Very similar thread. Lots of advice and help here.

I think at the very least you need to ring 111.

What have you tried so far, prunes, orange juice, ,laxatives, suppositories, baths. The blood is from pushing which can cause a tear or piles. Are you on meds that cause constipation.

notsuresal · 13/03/2022 20:31

Thanks everyone. I had gastric sleeve surgery almost 3 weeks ago (on Tuesday) and have been on obviously much less food and drink to normal, although starting to wean back onto usual foods now.

I'm not on any meds anymore, so just my vitamins. I have had my lactulose dose as per the instructions (given to me for times like these from the hospital) but It's not helped. It feels like im cut inside? 😟 I had a lot of fresh blood this morning 😣

With the recent medical history you absolutely should be going to A&E, I’d be on my way now but if it makes you feel better, wait until tomorrow morning when more doctors are in

Hugasauras · 13/03/2022 20:35

You def need to seek medical advice after such recent surgery. Call 111 at least.

Aphantasia · 13/03/2022 20:36

Absolutely A and E, you’ve just recently had surgery, and this is a change in your condition, fresh blood would worry me too if I were you so at the very least go for peace of mind. You will absolutely NOT be wasting anyone’s time by going

BlanketsBanned · 13/03/2022 20:36

I agree that as you have had recent abdo surgery you should seek medical help, you may have a tear in your bottom if youve been straining but it could be the surgery.

notsuresal · 13/03/2022 20:37

Thanks all. I think I've torn inside. So sorry to be graphic. But it's very painful, and stings a LOT. When I try and sit down it's throbbing 😟😣

Yep A&E given that you've had surgery recently!

This Good luck OP

A doctor can gently examine you and help with the pain, lay on your side if it's painful to sit and get someone to drive you to the hospital.

CrocodilesCry · 13/03/2022 22:37

You need to contact your surgeon for post-operative care - unless you had the procedure abroad?
If you had the GS in another country you need to call your GP or go to A&E.

notsuresal · 13/03/2022 22:45

I had my surgery here and GP is aware as the surgeon writes to them to advise beforehand and straight after the procedure.

I've managed a little bit of smoothie this evening so fingers crossed that helps love things through a bit!

You need to go to A&E but I would be massively increasing your lactulose intake to draw water into your bowels and soften your stools.

Are you drinking plenty of water?

Biscuitmonster2318 · 16/03/2022 00:01

I did end up going to A+E because I was constipated. I hadn’t been able to go for three weeks and the pain was awful. They x-rayed me to make sure it wasn’t a blockage.
The last week I’ve had different things to try to get it moving. With a little bit coming each day. On Saturday I did a bowel prep course as the final part of trying to move everything and sort it out as I’ve felt so unwell and uncomfortable.
At a+E last week they weighed me. I was just in a thin hospital gown and no shoes etc! I weighed 149.5. I checked the same day at home and was 148 at home. So hospital was accurate.
I only double checked because the last time I was in hospital, over the course of 24 hours I was three different weights depending on the scales I had to use.
Today, after a week of trying to get rid of my constipation I weighed myself. I’m now 127.5 pounds. So that’s the same weight as three of my babies at birth’s weight combined.

No wonder I’ve felt so unwell prior to this

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/03/2022 00:03

You need to go to A and E as you've just had surgery.
