Good news for anorak

I just got back from seeing my surgeon. He is very happy with the way my mastectomy wound is healing and took the last drain out - hooray! He says there are no concerns at this stage beyond the normal healing process.

Pathology results - he took out my sentinal lymph node during surgery and sent it for analysis, it tested positive so he took out the surrounding 15 nodes. Pathology results for those have come back negative so the cancer had not progressed beyond the sentinal node and the removal of the others should provide a safe margin.

Pathology also report that the tumour was as suspected and the margins removed all around it were healthy.

All this means that all the known cancer has been removed

I will be having a course of chemotherapy beginning around the end of January. I am hoping that since it is only to be on the safe side it might not be too drastic a type of chemo and that I might not have the worst of side-effects.

He asked his receptionist to make an appointment with the oncologist for me for next week. When she phoned his office she was told he was off the island and that his appointments are being covered by an oncologist from one of the top cancer hospitals in the US.

We bumped into a breast cancer nurse who has been a wonderful support to us just as we were leaving. When we told her about this visiting oncologist she said we should think of it as 'a gift from heaven' - she said she couldn't say more or she'd get fired from her job!

So that's it for now, many many thanks to everyone for the support you've given me, and I will keep you all posted as to my progress!

Oh anorak, I'm so relieved for you that I could weep. Good luck with the chemo - hope it isn't too grim and that you retain your amazing sense of positivity and calm.

Lots of gentle hugs

xxx

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 04/01/2008 20:56

Am so pleased for you Anorak. You still have the unknown infront of you with the chemo, but you have already got through a really difficult stage of your treatment. You should be proud of yourself xx

tigermoth · 04/01/2008 20:58

Oh I am so pleased things look so good, Anorak. And you appear to have a heavenly oncologist (is his name Gabriel? )

foxinsocks · 04/01/2008 21:01

Ah southeastastra it was cold wet and blowing a gale here for the last 3 days! It doesn't happen often though. It went down to about 60F or 10C which is pretty much as cold as it ever gets here. I didn't care, I put on my heating for the 2nd time this winter and put on socks and curled up on the sofa!

Oh what joy to sleep in this morning with no drain in my side so I didn't wake up with a sharp pain every time I rolled over in my sleep

I hadn't felt too stressed by all this but my DH told me last night that when the doc told me the good news he could see the difference in me immediately - he said I looked like a load had been lifted off my shoulders!

Hi Anorak glad it was good news.Do you know how long you course of treatment is.Mine starts on 15th jan and is 8 times three weeks apart followed by 5 weeks of radiotherepy. I was quite upset about it all yesterday as I thought I would be having 6 lots followed by radio, so I was hoping it would have finished befors the kids were on summer holidays.

brimfull · 05/01/2008 15:25

ArcticRoll · 05/01/2008 16:07

Fantastic news.

anorak · 05/01/2008 16:09

Oh beep! What did your pathology results say? - gosh your chemo is going to go on for a long time! Will it not just about have finished when they start the summer hols? If not then you'll probably only have one more to go, won't you? From what I've read the radiotherapy isn't as big a disruption to your life as the chemo.

I don't know yet the details of my chemo - will find out next Thurs when I meet the 'gift from heaven' oncologist!

Yes Frau the chemo will be in Bermuda. I would only have had to go to the US if I'd needed radiation. But I've been talking to them about a reconstruction later in the year and it's possible I might go the US for that. You could come and visit me here though!
