Funny smell..

For the last week or so I have been experiencing a smell on and off that no one else can smell.

It's a florally type smell. Not unpleasant.

At first I thought it was a new diffuser. So I moved it. It's not the same smell on investigation.

Then I thought it was daffodils. Got rid of them and I can still smell it.

I can smell it at home, at work, in the car, everywhere. But not all the same.

I can almost taste if some times.

As I say it's not unpleasant but the fact no one else can smell it I'm finding weird.

Any ideas?!

I have a really acute sense of smell and I sometimes smell things that aren't there - but it does tend to be quite briefly, and it's not the same smell twice. I think it's definitely worth seeing your Dr or getting an ENT referral (if that's even possible these days).

yorkshireteaspoonie · 10/03/2022 04:28

I experience this as part of epilepsy seizure warning. They are called auras. I have simple partial seizures (I don't 'drop or seize') but experience the smell and a strong sense of deja vu, I get trapped in a moment and can't communicate momentarily. Afterwards I'm super tired and need to sleep while my brain recovers.

I thought I was going mad for years until I told a doctor who knew instantly what it was. I didn't develop it until my mid twenties and the only thing We can attribute it too was a knock to the head when I'd had a few too many once 🤷🏽‍♀️

I get that smell of pencil sharpenings crayons and musty books.
It's unnerving. But it brings me back to a happy time.

I've got a GP appointment next week. Not had it at all today... yet!

I'll update if it's anything interesting!

deflatedbirthday how was the GP appointment?

deflatedbirthday · 20/03/2022 22:31

@Mumzoo5070 it never happened 😩 they didn't call and I had to rebook for Tuesday.

I am still having the smell intermittently however it's now associated with the urge to sleep and I cannot fight it. It seems to happen in the early evening. I fall asleep for approx 20 mins and on waking I cannot speak for 2-3 minutes. I feel foggy minded and exhausted.

I've ruled out covid and pregnancy.

Well the smell is back with a vengeance today!! But I feel more awake than previous days.

Absolutely baffling!

SwissCheeseRentedChildren · 21/03/2022 20:24

How strange! Please do keep us posted. I hope it’s nothing serious.

Mumzoo5070 · 22/03/2022 19:33

How did your appointment go today deflatedbirthday ?

deflatedbirthday · 23/03/2022 13:11

@Mumzoo5070 it got cancelled again!!

So the GP seemed as baffled as me. I have to go for a facial nerve assessment next weekly ad I have previously had Ramsey Hunt Syndrome.

It remains a mystery for now...

Mumzoo5070 · 25/03/2022 20:02

Blimey! Hope you get some answers soon. I know someone who had random strange smells and it turned out to be a large fungal sinus infection only visible on brain scan.

PurplePumpkinDream · 25/03/2022 20:15

I had weird smells on and off for ages before Covid, they eventually went, never had them investigated. Some were quite bad, so at least yours are pleasant!

LiveintheNow · 25/03/2022 20:25

Maybe ask GP to consider epilepsy? Seizures can affect all senses including smell, it would leave you very tired too.

Dillidalli · 25/03/2022 20:35

Have you had covid at all in the last 6 months? Just wondering as it can damage your Olfactory nerves and cause them to misfire. This can can cause Anosmia, Parosmia or phantosmia.

Sapphireskies · 25/03/2022 20:37

Hope you get seen soon OP and that all is okay. All I can think of is Covid, although if you have had it in the past and it's just a long term symptom?

deflatedbirthday · 26/03/2022 22:43

Thanks all! To clarify I I've not had covid to my knowledge (I test twice weekly for work!)

Epilepsy had crossed my mind. I work in neurology (nhs) so I might consider asking one of the consultants what they think.

So I finally saw a GP

I've been referred to neurology ? Seizures.

I'm a bit Confused and worried now. I thought they'd say stress and that'd be that.

I haven't had the smell for two days until earlier when I was stood, felt suddenly dizzy and quite unwell and then bam it hit me. I was in public so it wasn't at home or any other familiar place.

I've felt very unwell all week. Negative for covid. Negative pregnancy test.

On top of a fibromyalgia and hyper mobility diagnosis five weeks ago and endometriosis surgery last year I'm just done in.

SwissCheeseRentedChildren · 02/04/2022 19:01

You’ve been referred to neurology to find out if it’s seizures?

Must be scary, but great that you’ll be tested and whatnot.

Keep on keeping on, I guess. Do you write it down each time you have an episode?

deflatedbirthday · 03/04/2022 23:05

@SwissCheeseRentedChildren

Yeah referral to neurology as my GP was concerned about simple partial seizures.

I'm very scared deep down but trying to put a brave face on. I've just had another episode of uncontrollable tiredness and then unable to come round/ disorientation.

I've made a note of when things happen. I had the smell earlier today. There's just no pattern to be seen.

SwissCheeseRentedChildren · 04/04/2022 01:55

How odd 🧐. Sending hugs.

deflatedbirthday · 06/04/2022 19:30

Just a little update

No referral done yet despite my app being almost a week ago.

I had another 'sleep' episode but this time I couldn't open my eyes or speak.

The smell is intermittent and still no real pattern

OP posts:
HappydaysArehere · 06/04/2022 19:34

Is it worth getting a urine sample tested. Just saying as I had a strange smell coming from my wee and it was a bladder infection but no other symptoms.

deflatedbirthday · 06/04/2022 19:47

@HappydaysArehere

I did a urine dip at work (perks of the job 😉) mainly for pregnancy but also did for uti just in case. Nada.

I can't get through to my GP to chase the blinking referral.

OP posts:
deflatedbirthday · 07/04/2022 16:36

My referral was received and triaged this morning. I have been referred for an MRI brain under the epilepsy protocol.

I have no idea what that actually means. Needless to say I'm getting myself into a state about it! 😔
