DS has pneumonia :(

Spent the whole day up the hospital yesterday with DS (2.7) because he had a temp for 2 weeks. We did see the Dr twice but they refered us on the 2nd visit. Anyway, the hospital did a chest x-ray which revealed his whole right lung is covered. When I told my MIL, she said 'well thats what happens when you don't treat a cough'
He didn't even have much of a cough. He was sick and went to the Drs the very next day, so I do not feel that I have done anything wrong. But listening to my MIL, of course I should have done more! I normally get on really well with her, but sometimes I have to stand up for myself!

Kid, ds was hospitalised earlier in the year with pneumonia. He was very poorly and we were very, very worried. We had trouble getting our dr to take us seriously despite very obvious and rapid deteriation in ds (that dr has since been struck off for something else)! I don't know why I am rambling it was just horrible, horrible, horrible and I sympathise. Hope your ds is better soon. (Although I have to warn you ds caught everything for months and months afterwards and I hardly saw the light of day for five weeks whilst ds was ill so be prepared for a long haul.)

As for MIL. As you usually have good relationship could it be that she is just venting because of her concern. You don't deserve it, she shouldn't have said it but maybe in this instance it is best, for the time being at least, to let it go.

Hope he gets better soon. Don't pay any attention to what MIL said and don't say you could have done more! You wouldn't have expected him to have that would you - probably thought just another virus! Take care

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Ignore her. Pneumonia is EASY to miss in small children, doctors often don't pick it up immediately, as you know. Hopefully it's her concern for her dgs talking.

I was just wondering as the hospital didn't actually give me any advice other than give him the antibiotics 3 times a day. Is it better to keep DS inside? How long is it likely to last and how is there a risk that DD or other kids will catch it?
Also, we have economy 7 storage heaters but none of the ones in the bedrooms work, could that be a problem, the HA are planning to fix them shortly but I don't know when.

we had this with dd. She had just turned 2-ish and had pneumonia. She had a temp for well over a week and I had gone to the dr's twice (she wasnt coughing) third time dh took her and she had to go into hospital. then they though she meningitis, but luckily (I think) it was pneumonia. i felt awful, but even the dr said that they are that up and down with it to begin with you never know. Plus little ones tend to go off quickly anyway.

Fingers crossed for a quick recoverey for your littl one. Forget about MIl, she is clueless.

There is a school of thought that says unheated bedrooms in modern houses are healthier than cranking up the central heating. We hardly have the heating on in our bedrooms, even in winter. I think they need to be well-ventilated and in a home where there is a good overall level of warmth though, kid.
Pneumonia is not catching and usually responds very quickly to antibiotic treatment. Sounds like he is already on the mend! If he is able to walk about without it affecting his breathing then I'd let him have some fresh air. It is a lovely crisp sunny day where I am.
Winnie's point about him being prone to subsequent bouts of chestiness for a while is a good one. Once he comes off the antibiotics it might be worth boosting his immune system with extra probiotics (in Yakult, Actimel or just good old live yogurt).
Poor you, what a horrible worry.

DS1 (5) had this at Easter. He had the whole surgical team and pediatric team round his bed at one point because they couldn't decide between appendicitis or meningitis. Pneunomia was a rank outsider. He has no cough whatsoever at any point in the proceedings. Your MIL doesn't know what she's talking about - if a GP, 2 A&E doctors and a roomful of medical experts have trouble diagnosing it what chance do us mere mortals have?

We just treated him gently until he was more himself. Made sure he was wrapped up warm and didn't over exert himself and he made a swift and full recovery with his antibiotics.

No one DS1 had been in contact with caught anything. I'm not sure if you do catch pneumonia as such, I think it's just how an ordinary infection happens to turn out.

Soupdragon has a very good point. the dr's looking at dd had no idea what it was as she hadnt a cough either - and pneumonia can be silent (I have been told)

we just let dd get over it and then fed her up and kept her as mobile as possible to shift any 'muck'
