DS says he has chest pain

DS, 19, told me some hours ago that he's experiencing pain in the centre of his chest. He describes the pain as being deeper than his breastbone and hurting mainly when he takes a deep breath.

I've checked his blood pressure and heart rate and both are normal for him (low BP, but it's always been low). He has no cough or any other symptoms.

I thought it might be stress since he's working very hard for exams, but what else might it be? It's very late night where I am and it won't be easy to get to a doctor for another eight hours or so. He's not particularly uncomfortable, but this isn't something that's happened before and I'm worried.

If you were in the U.K. (?) I’d be saying ring 111. Any chest pain needs investigation, whatever age the person is. Ideally he needs an ecg and blood tests.

No, we're not in the UK and there's no 111 equivalent unfortunately. Thank you for your reply.

Costochondritis?

FeelingForced · 22/02/2022 18:25

I just checked the symptoms of costochondritis and they fit.

I'm wondering if it would be okay to give him ibuprofen for the night.

And head to the doctor as soon as the clinic opens in the morning.
