If blood in urine isnt from infection what else could it be?

I called my gp last wednesday with back/side pain and got told to drop in a urine sample. Apparently that showed +protein ++blood And ++leucocytes so the surgery sent it to the lab.

They hadnt had the results back on friday afternoon and so didnt want to give me antibiotics but they said that if they hadnt had results yet it was likely to be negative?

Over the weekend i have had the back pain, its mild/moderate not unbearable, some stomach pains and a pretty bad headache.

A friend of mine had a box of urine dipsticks and i tried it ( i know this wont make any difference but it was mire curiosity than anything!

It just showed up quite a dark square for the blood category and maybe +1 for protein.

Im going to call the gp tomorrow but i feel like if it isnt coming back as an infection i kind if want to know what it is rather than being told its not an infection as though i should just love on Blush

Has anyone had this because tbh its getting more than a tad annoying at this point.

Kidney stones (which is what your symptoms sound like) .
You can also get it from strenuous exercise.

Walkingandtalking · 20/02/2022 19:49

Its certainly not from strenuous exercise Grin

Kidney related - stones, inflammation, etc.
or bladder related - again, inflammation without infection or possible chronic intercystinal cystitis (won’t show as infection).

I’m currently going through this very same thing, although I do have a lot of other health conditions- lupus, Addisons, hypothyroidism, pituitary issues etc so they’re wanting me to have a kidney biopsy as they think in my case it may be related to my lupus. But if you don’t have lupus they may refer you to a urologist for investigation.

Is the blood visible when you urinate?

Walkingandtalking · 20/02/2022 19:55

Thanks - im sorry to hear you are having so many problems.

I think i am generally health apart from i had two episodes of SVT and now i take ivabradine to keep my heart calm but i dont think that would affect my kidneys?

Side pain and blood could be a stone.

Walkingandtalking · 20/02/2022 19:57

Rose red - no i havent noticed any blood - the main problem was back pain around kidney area and then this weekend i have felt under the weather and headachey. My whole muddle section feels sorts of tender if im honest but im not in agonizing pain or anything

Kidney stones are very common. BIL passed one and was in so much pain he went to a@e but if they’re smaller you can just pass them without knowing but they can scratch on the way down, hence the blood.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 20/02/2022 20:01

I had something similar to this last year but was uncomfortable rather than in pain. Two different lots of antibiotics later it went, but nothing ever seemed to come of the urine tests. It has been suggested to me it was linked to the Covid I had experienced 10 weeks earlier.

ViceLikeBlip · 20/02/2022 20:07

Surely ++leucocytes is infection? That said, I'm sure I had a UTI a couple of weeks ago (felt like pissing razors, desperate and constant urge to go, bright red blood when wiping. I had +leucocytes and +protein on a home urine dip, and obvs +++blood) but i was just so busy at work I couldn't even call the GP, so I just drank bucket loads of water and it did clear up on its own.

FeralBeryl · 20/02/2022 20:23

Ooft you poor thing. A hot water bottle is your best mate here. Urine dipsticks can mean a variety of things, you can have a kidney infection with little to no urinary symptoms, kidney stones, renal colic as well as a nasty UTI. In the meantime, hot water bottle, loads of fluids and rest. Hope you get some answers soon

Walkingandtalking · 20/02/2022 20:24

Thanks!
I dont have any actual urinary symptoms no burning or frequent weeing or pain while weeing it was just the back/side pain.

Yep - I ended up in hospital with pyelonephritis and had zero symptoms apart from feeling like a horse was kicking me in my side Grin (I eventually developed a temp of 41 and was desperately ill) Please don't let them fob you off, any type of urosepsis can be dangerous, especially with your cardiac history. Let us know how you get on, hope you improve soon Thanks

So the doctor text this morning saying they need a new sample because the original one might have been contaminated and sent the results of that.

WBC: >100 x106/L
RBC: >100 x10
6/L
Epithelial cells: ++
Antibiotic therapy: Nil
Epithelial Sysmex 95 x10^6/L
Culture: .
Count (x106/l): >100
Mixed growth: probable contaminants
2.
3.
Normal reference range WBCs 100 x10
6/L is considered more suggestive of infection
The urinanalyser does not reliably detect or measure
microscopic haematuria. Please correlate clinically.

I need to take another sample in - so now i have to go out in the wind and get a train to the doctors Sad i just feel like hiding under a blanket Sad

Obvsiously none if those results mean anything to me maths has never been my strong point and if i see x10 etc my mind just shuts the door.

Oh you poor thing, how are you feeling now? How is the pain in your side? If they aren't wanting to treat you with antibiotics, I'd certainly ask if they are considering scanning you if this persists. Fingers crossed this next sample is a bit clearer (the last one basically is suggestive of a bacterial infection but if contamination is suspected, it wouldn't be good practice to give you antibiotics without repeating)
