Has my DD got measles ?

FoghornLeghorn · 01/01/2008 18:28

DD has suddenly come up with a rash - I say suddenly, I noticed it about an hour ago. First noticed on her forehead and now all over her tummy and back, although seems owrse on her back - nothing on arms or legs.
It's a red rash, litle small pin pricks (I have done the tumbler tests and feel sure it's nothing more sinister), it isn't raised at all.
Thinking back now, she has been out of sorts for a few days, falling asleep in her highchair, when she's picked up she wants to get down, when she's down she wants to get up and generally grizzly which she isn't usually.
She is 13 months btw.
Have tried to take pic of rash - will try and upload

Hs she had her MMR yet foghorn?

FoghornLeghorn · 01/01/2008 18:39

No she is due it this month FA
Have just read up a bit about measle and it sounds like it is. the marks on her head are in her hairline, she has been out of sorts for a few days, had runny nose, cough etc but thought it was just a cold. She has just screamed the most high pitched scream I have ever heard.
And I've just read it's not good for pregnant women to be exposed to

Foghorn might be the same thing it's very odd here

CarGirl · 01/01/2008 18:42

I would call the doctor out to you tomorrow to get it confirmed it's a horrible disease. Dose her on calpol to keep any fever at bay.

FlllightAttendant · 01/01/2008 18:43

Oh dear, I'm sorry if it is. Fwiw, I did have it when I was 9, I wasn't too bad.
Hope it's not.

lilyloo · 01/01/2008 18:44

If it's any consolation when i showed midwife she said it could be viral reaction to cold which dd has now just started with. Measles crossed my mind too but it hasn't spread anywhere else.
Not sure about the pg thing but i 39 + 3 today so not good news if it is! Think i am going to take trip to docs tom to see what they say so will let you know!

needmorecoffee · 01/01/2008 18:45

she got any white spots inside her mouth? Measles rash tends to be flat and not distinct spots, here
One of mine had measles. Took her to a homeopath and dosed her with Vit A (not OD'ed of course) Lots of calpol too.

belgo · 01/01/2008 18:45

there are lots of viruses that cause a rash, a lot of them are normal childhood illnesses. Has she had a sore throat?

FlllightAttendant · 01/01/2008 18:46

Oh good point, look in her mouth if you can FHLH?

FoghornLeghorn · 01/01/2008 18:47

Have just dosed her up on calpol, will put her to bed and see how we go.
Her balance is really off too, she's fallen over countless times today - would this be connected ?

she may also have an ear infection.

It does sound like she should see a doctor.

FoghornLeghorn · 01/01/2008 18:49

Needmorecoffee - it's starting to look more that way, merging into big blotches.
Have tried to look into her mouth but it's quite hard. Would the spots still be there now ?

OP posts:
FoghornLeghorn · 01/01/2008 18:50

I thought ear infection too. DD1 suffered terribly with them for a few years so know what to look out for. Wondered if the 2 wouold be connected though. Guess i;ll be taking the 5 mile walk to the GP's tomorrow

OP posts:
belgo · 01/01/2008 18:51

yes, viruses and other illnesses can result in an ear infection as a sort of secondary infection.

Kids are always a worry aren't they?

CarGirl · 01/01/2008 18:53

I would call them and say you think it could be measles and you want a home visit - it's very contagious (spellling) so you don't want to go spreading it?? Well it's worth a try!

FoghornLeghorn · 01/01/2008 18:53

It's just one thing after another Belgo. What with yesterday's goings on and now this, I feel exhausted !

OP posts:
belgo · 01/01/2008 18:55

I can imagine! As Cargirl says, it's well worth trying to get a home visit.

FoghornLeghorn · 01/01/2008 18:57

I have put her to bed now - am I right in pressuming there is nothing that actually be done if it is measles, therefore, there is no urgency in her being seen by GP ? More to actually diagnose it more than anything else ?
I will see if I can get a home visit tomorrow

FoghornLeghorn · 01/01/2008 19:34

Oh god I have just frightened the bejeezus out of myself looking this up. I've had the MMR so would this cover the baby too ?

OP posts:
CarGirl · 01/01/2008 19:36

I don't think it will, my older dds had their boosters early as there was a measles outbreak around here summer 2006 and dd4 was to young to have the MMR, the guideline was to ensure older siblings were vaccinated as they would most likely give it to younger sibs.

Try not to google anymore, just get a diagnosis tomorrow.

FoghornLeghorn · 02/01/2008 06:38

DD is now covered. Not so much her legs but her face, neck, tummy and back are totally covered and it definitely looks like measles.
I'm going to call the GP's as soon as they open and see if someone can come out, I don't want to take her incase she is contagious

OP posts:
FlllightAttendant · 02/01/2008 06:47

Oh poor mite. I think it is notifiable? So they are likely to come out imo. Hope he is not feeling too poorly? What is her temp like?

FlllightAttendant · 02/01/2008 06:47

sorry she...

FlllightAttendant · 02/01/2008 06:49

How pregnant are you?

FlllightAttendant · 02/01/2008 06:51

this says you can have imunoglobulin if you are pg, did you have measles as a child? If so you should be Ok.
