Has my DD got measles ?

FoghornLeghorn · 01/01/2008 18:28

DD has suddenly come up with a rash - I say suddenly, I noticed it about an hour ago. First noticed on her forehead and now all over her tummy and back, although seems owrse on her back - nothing on arms or legs.
It's a red rash, litle small pin pricks (I have done the tumbler tests and feel sure it's nothing more sinister), it isn't raised at all.
Thinking back now, she has been out of sorts for a few days, falling asleep in her highchair, when she's picked up she wants to get down, when she's down she wants to get up and generally grizzly which she isn't usually.
She is 13 months btw.
Have tried to take pic of rash - will try and upload

This is the thing Pooka, it's not as if I want her to have measles fgs, I just want to feel confident in the GP's assessment of her .......... which I don't !
Nortynamechanger - It sounds exactly the same. How long before your DD improved and the rash started to go ?

Can't tell you if its measles or not, but I do know that GPs see very few cases of measles theses days and that many newer ones may well have never seen it, so they are not necessarily going to be able to diagnose it.

Friend's DS (6 and not had MMR) had what she was certain was measles recently, he'd been in contact withother kid's who had it, complained of sore throat, had classic rash and spots in mouth (Koplick's spots). She took him to GP for note for school, and was told that "measles doesn't exist in this area" and that it was a "wild measles type virus". She is convinced it was measles though.

Hope she is feeling better soon.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 02/01/2008 19:29

HAve not read the whole thread, but if it is measles she should not be exposed to bright lights - ie not be lookn ginot bright lights, inlcusing bright sunlight, so if you can get a home visit would be better.

nortynamechanger · 02/01/2008 22:18

FL He was actually more ill in the days leading up to the rash - mild cough and cold, not eating, drinking little, temp of 39+. My own GP thought he must have a ITU (on a Thurs)as had no outward symptoms, eardrums were a bit pink (to be expected with a high temp anyway) eyes were a bit red (ditto) and he was slightly dehydrated.

By Sat his temp had eased up, he'd been on ABs for 24 hrs - started as soon as I'd get a pee sample for ITU check. Rash appeared Sat afternoon, behind ears and in hair were the most established areas, then his back and chest - eventually. Sat eve took him to the on call Dr.

The rash didn't ever spread beyond his trunk to his legs, it did change from pinprick spots that were quite 'textured' - you could feel his rash - to flatter more 'rosy' blotches. The spots faded from his head and face after 48 hrs, trunk 24-48 hours after that. So he had spots for 4 days ish.

But like all illnesses you can get a mild or major dose/immune response. I was convinced it was measles btw until I saw GP, then I was convinced it couldn't have been GM as the rash cleared up so quickly.

foghorn... where in the country are you? It's just that my mother is a GP in London and she called me before Christmas to tell me that there was a local outbreak of measles and that I was to be careful (I have an 11 month ds, not jabbed yet either...).

orangina · 02/01/2008 22:29

Sorry, that didn't sound very helpful, I just meant that you would have reason to get shirty with your GP or take your dd to A&E with ample justification if you were a west londoner.... how is she now by the way?

suedonim · 03/01/2008 18:30

What's the latest, FoghornL?

orangina · 03/01/2008 19:43

Yes, was just thinking of you now....

FoghornLeghorn · 04/01/2008 11:14

We had a bad day yesterday - DD2 got herself into such a state she was hysterical She threw up and was hot to touch still, although impossible to get an accurate read from thermometer.
After having a dose of calpol she perked up but deteriorated again as the afternoon went on. She had a rough night too and has just woken up from a nap.
The rash has gone from her face but is still on her tummy, back and now her arms.
DD1 has been in bed all morning, pale as a sheet, says her tummy is hurting

Oh god. I wonder if you could call someone out, they both sound so poorly. If you were to get the out of hours doctor, surely it might be a different one to your usual?

Sorry you are going through this, it must be hellish

orangina · 04/01/2008 11:45

Poor you Foghorn... would it not be worth taking her to A&E? At least she would be seen by a paediatrician.... does your local hospital have a pead a&e? They can be very efficient.... so sorry you are having to go through this

FoghornLeghorn · 04/01/2008 11:58

Things is she is not constantly grizzly, when she has had some calpol she perks up considerably but it doesn't tend to last the full 4 hours in between doses. I'm concerned that if I go back to GP's or A&E and she isn't overly grizzly they will just dismiss me like they have so far. When I went to GP's the other day, DD2 screamed the whole way there and the walk to my mums afterwards but while we were in the GP's she was as happy as larry

Have you tried calling NHS Direct. They are pretty good are over ruling GPs if need be.

Hope the DDs are better soon.

LilRedWG · 04/01/2008 12:06

0845 46 47 or here.

belgo · 04/01/2008 15:13

sorry to hear your dd is still unwell- even if it's not measles, it sounds very nasty! I hope she gets well soon. It's awful being pregnant and coping with a sick child.

FoghornLeghorn · 04/01/2008 15:16

They are both asleep now. I put DD2 down in her cot about 40 mins ago as she was rubbing her eyes but didn't expect her to get to sleep as she's already had 1.5 hours sleep this morning. Just went upstairs to check on her and DD1 is all tucked up in her bed, fast asleep with her Woody toy (this is the child who never sleeps in the day).
Figuring it's the best place for them and hopefully they'll feel better when they wake up.

Am staying at my parents house tonight so Mum can cook for me & Dad can make me laugh - just what I need

Just read this - sending loads of sympathy. This sounds an awful bug.

You say that you are using Calpol, but did you know that you can uses Junior Neurofen too. It's three doses a day, so you can plan to alternate them with the calpol, so that they get pain relief/temperature control every 2-3 hours, rather than every 4 hours.

Hope that helps.

FoghornLeghorn · 04/01/2008 15:26

NQGU - My SIL recommended this today. I will get some this afternoon

OP posts:
nortynamechanger · 04/01/2008 15:26

FL I'm glad she is not getting worse, can you not give calpol (wait 3 hrs) ibruprofen (wait 3 hours) calpol (wait 3 hours) etc to get her 24 hour pain/fever relief?

I used to not give it to DS as he is asthmatic, but was then given the stats for asthma attacks/allergic reaction and it was minute. Much easier to cope with illness with both.

I hope you get a well deserved break tonight.

Notquitegrownup · 05/01/2008 16:48

Just popping in to see how you all are today. Hope the little ones are recovering.
