Has my DD got measles ?

FoghornLeghorn · 01/01/2008 18:28

DD has suddenly come up with a rash - I say suddenly, I noticed it about an hour ago. First noticed on her forehead and now all over her tummy and back, although seems owrse on her back - nothing on arms or legs.
It's a red rash, litle small pin pricks (I have done the tumbler tests and feel sure it's nothing more sinister), it isn't raised at all.
Thinking back now, she has been out of sorts for a few days, falling asleep in her highchair, when she's picked up she wants to get down, when she's down she wants to get up and generally grizzly which she isn't usually.
She is 13 months btw.
Have tried to take pic of rash - will try and upload

I'm finding it hard to take her temp at the mo but she is hot to touch.
I am nearly 10 weeks pregnant.
I've had measle as a child and I also had a booster in 2005 when DD1 had her MMR as there had been an outbreak in our area.
I read yesterday that it was notifiable so fingers crossed they should come out - surely they want it contained as much as possible

Oh I am relieved, I hadn't realised till googling that it was so dangerous for pregnant women.
Let us know how you get on x

FoghornLeghorn · 02/01/2008 07:02

Me either FA, I frightened myself silly yesterday but what can I do if it is measles -I can't exactly steer clear of her, she's 13 months old and I'm home alone with 2DD's until Friday, no avoiding it !

But do ask about Immunoglobulin, it may help alleviate if you're not already immune...which it sounds as though you are. I don't think having the imm. can harm you at any rate.

CarGirl · 02/01/2008 13:31

hi, how's it going did the dr come out? I was really hopinng that it wasn't measles

belgo · 02/01/2008 17:45

how is she Foghorn?

belgo · 02/01/2008 17:52

bump because I know Foghorn is around

FoghornLeghorn · 02/01/2008 17:59

Thanks Belgo.

Well we took the 5 mile walk to the GP's - GP lifted DD's vest by about an inch and said it wasn't measles, it must be a viral infection like measles. I said I wanted DD's ears checking as she has been off balance so she put her finger behind D's ear and said no there's nothing wrong with her ears. She didn't look in her ears, didn't look in her mouth, didn't check her chest, didn't check her temperature, didn't ask how she had been and any other symptons she had - which I thought were all standard proceedures for any GP's appointment.
I felt like screaming at her - not that I want DD to have measles but because I don't feel confident that she assessed DD properly and was informed enough to make such a quick judgement. I got up and walked out.

DD has slept for 3 hours this afternoon - what with feeling poorly and the cold air for the hours walk. The rash is still there, all over her face, behind ears, down neck, all over tummy & back - it is now slowly starting to appear on her arms.
She keeps pulling her hair and hitting her head as if she has a headache so will keep up with the calpol to help her temperature and hopefully take away any pain she is having.

Not at all happy with GP's

I agree. Bloody cheek if you ask me. #Is it feasible, Foggy?

belgo · 02/01/2008 18:04

I am very surprised the doctor didn't o those checks - my GP does those checks everytime I've taken my children there.

But hopefully the doctor can recognise a measles rash - so I would be inclined to believe that it's not measles ( there are loads of viruses that cause rashes), although your GP doesn't really inspire faith in her.

I hope your dd gets well soon - maybe alternate calpol and children's nurofen to keep the pain at bay?

If she gets worse, do not hesitate to contact the doctor again.

FoghornLeghorn · 02/01/2008 18:07

There are only 2 GP's in the surgery - husband and wife - and they are bothas bad as each other in my experience.
I've only been there 3 times and have had similar experiences on all occassions. I took DD1 with an ear infection once to be told it wasn't, went back a week later to be told it was. Took DD2 with chest infection to be told it wasn't, went back a week later to be told it was ......

I am looking into an alternative surgery

doesn't really inspire faith at all. And that is a very important part of a GP's job, to reassure the patient, and your GPS clearly are not doing that.

I hope you can find a GP, and one who lives closer!

FoghornLeghorn · 02/01/2008 18:13

Didn't look in anything MMJ. Literally lifted her vest an inch and then dismissed me

Foghorn, I thought my DS had measles before Xmas - unexplained illness/temp/grizzly and laying on floor exhausted for a few days then rash started behind ears and spread over face, down neck, back and chest - it was spreading almost as I watched, I marked him with a felt pen to see! None on arms or legs.

I took him to out of hours (they were too busy to come out) and it was German Measles. The rash sounds very similar to your LO. fwiw GP I saw said if had been measles my DS would have inflammation of the linings of eyes causing a conjunctivitis/obvious reddening, also of mouth linings causing white spots/ulcers/sores.

He was feeling much better within 2 days of spots appearing, his temp dropped within 24 hrs. Good luck, I hope all better soon.

suedonim · 02/01/2008 18:22

I'd be thinking of a trip to A&E, too. My 80yo mum diagnosed measles in a neighbour's toddler when the child was admitted to hospital very poorly with a 'mystery' illness. None of the Dr's had ever seen a measles rash, and the child had had her MMR, so they didn't realise what they were looking at. Although there's nothing to be done about the actual illness, antibiotic cover can be given to wards off secondary infections. Hope your dd is better soon.

nortynamechanger · 02/01/2008 18:25

Sue, I didn't want to scare anyone with the reminder that the initial MMR is effective in only 80% of cases. So if your child has had first vac or not, they may still be at risk.

suedonim · 02/01/2008 18:32

So that's why they brought in the booster at school age? My older dd, who's 20, was one of the first to have MMR, back in 1988, when it was almost 'sold' to us as the holy grail.....

FoghornLeghorn · 02/01/2008 18:41

Namechanger - DD has no spots inside the mouth, as far as I can see but she does have red rings around her eye (on her lids).
I really don't want to be going to A&E if I can help it - DH is away until the weekend with the car, so I have no mode of transport and DD1 too.
Would it be irresponsible of me to leave it ?

I would usually trust a doctor but apart from the spots in the mouth DD seems to have or have had every symptom linked with Measles.

Gos, why is this stuff just never ending - been in A&E this week already !

OP posts:
suedonim · 02/01/2008 18:56

If it was me, wrt to leaving it or not, it would depend on how ill she is in herself. Eg if she is floppy, very hot, hard to rouse or going downhill etc I'd be getting more advice. Otoh, if she's just whingy as though she had a cold, I'd not be too worried. Hope you get some sleep tonight!

FoghornLeghorn · 02/01/2008 19:01

So do I Sue - I've just put the phone down on DH because he rings when he knows it's bedtime, DD2 was screaming and I mean screming yet he still continues to ask me to sort out his van insurance and tax and can I get on the internet and do it ASAP because it's important ! ARRGGGG

Now I feel bad because he'll be worrying I'm not coping and there's nothing he can do about it ......

DD's are in bed now - DD2 is not floppy, she is hot but not dopey. She was grizzly but was also due a dose of calpol.
Although the rash is spreading her symptoms aren't worsening, just not improving !

OP posts:
nortynamechanger · 02/01/2008 19:05

My DD did have red eyes - lids as well as one very red white (as it were) but GP put that down to temp/rubbing/tiredness.

What a worry for you.

pooka · 02/01/2008 19:07

TBH if she still is poorly tomorrow I would take her to A&E. Or even tonight, if she wakes up and is not improved.
The bare minimum I would expect a Dr to do would be to look in ears, listen to chest. A small peek at part of a rash is in no way adequate to rule out not only measles, but ear infection, other infection.
It is simply not good enough. Particularly when you're dealing with a small child/baby.
