DS1 (16) was admitted to hospital today and I really need any calming words I cna find. He went down with a fever and severe chills on 18 Dec and 2 days later his neck swelled like a balloon on one side. He was given penicillen which reduced the swelling but he finished course on Sunday and this morning at 5 am he came to me with fevers, chills and a swelling neck again. Admitted today, and early tests show lymph gland infectivity, no pus in gland, probably not glanular fever, and bloodtests that doc won't discuss until tomorrow. He's on IV antibiotics, penicillin and something else. Has anyone else experienced this - both dh and I are catastrophising despite efforts not to panic so advice would be gratefully received. Thanks

Hi, I've been thinking along the same lines as Nightcat, 3 years ago I had Mastoiditis which is an infection of the mastoid bone of the skull which is situated right behind the ears I had a lot of pain, swelling and redness which started behind the ear and then went down my neck I felt very ill with fever and dizziness as well and I ended up in A&E. I have a lot of health problems anyway but thats the worst I have felt in a long time.

I just wanted to send you my very best wishes and hugs as the not knowing and all the tests must be really worrying for all of you. I hope he feels better soon, will be thinking of you x.

No, no pain (other than sore throat when fever first struck) and mouth is fine. They are culturing biopsy for TB, but can you pick up TB and not have other symptoms like cough etc??

Sorry I don't really know anything about TB but I thought the symptoms included a cough and chest pain.

It looks like the Doctor's are being really thorough and trying to rule out as many things as possible which is really good but the not knowing must be hard and very worrying. I hope he is feeling better soon.

how awful callme, you must be feeling really stressed out. Hope you have some proper answers soon.

Hope he's better soon.

I think with TB you'd only have the cough if it was in your lungs. It can affect various parts of the body.

I wish I could recall the exact name of the illness but the dd of one of dh's colleagues has had a weirdy lump in her neck. She was about 3yo when it began and the Dr's thought the worst, to begin with. But she actually had a condition that is usually confined to birds . She's had TB-like symptoms with it, too. She had several operations as they've been very cautious each time in not removing too much tissue as it was close to a nerve but last I heard she'd made a full recovery.

re above - maybe psitticosis???
TB you can get anywhere - lymph nodes, bone, urine - without a cough - but all treatable with certain antibiotics.
it does sound like an infection rather than anything more sinister - because of sore throat/fever/chills. often it takes a while to isolate the bacteria/virus/fungus (just different type of "bugs")so they know what sort of meds to start. don't worry too much - it will be ok!

Hope he's better soon. You think you're over the worst of the worries when they grow up but, sadly not.

suedonim · 07/01/2008 21:32

SaraH, no, it's not psitticosis, though I know someone who caught that from pigeons that had invaded their attic!

Lol at the scar, CMM - what are they like??

luvaduck · 16/01/2008 23:58

how are things?

Biopsy results came back negative for lymphoma on Monday, thankfully. We now have to wait 6 weeks or so to see if they grow anything nasty. He's finally off antibiotics which is good as long as the swelling doesn't come back again, but the consultant deosn't seem convinced that the bacterial infection has gone yet, so fingers crossed please!

Callmemadam - I'm still keeping my fingers crossed, was only thinking about you this morning as I couldn't remember seeing any recent posts but I then had to go out. Really glad the biopsy came back negative, sending you positive vibes for the other test results six weeks is a long time to wait but worth it I guess if they come back negative.

Good luck and best wishes hope his feeling better soon x.
