Not sertraline but citalopram completely stops my IBS pain and has done for 30 years. The moment I try and reduce the dose below 10mg (I try every couple of years) the pain returns.

It's been a life saver for me - the pain was so debilitating. I guess it depends on what sort of IBS you have. It may not work for other types or for someone else.

Sertraline didn't have any effect on my IBS unfortunately. Neither did amytriptriline (spelt very wrong)

But my IBS is more nerve related than food related I think

Yes I had explosive diarrhoea. I had had every test under the sun all normal. I was treated for anxiety with sertraline (which is now much better!) and as a side benefit the IBS went away.
I think in my case the IBS was caused by the anxiety so once the anxiety was under control then the IBS improved.

I had escitalopram which I have heard anecdotally can be a bit easier than sertraline if you are new to ADs.
Escitalopram was diagnosed for my severe anxiety disorder; I was basically passing liquid every morning and was very underweight. It helped almost immediately, after a shaky start (your anxiety can 'peak' first few days and I did collapse with my 1st ever panic attack day 1). After that, it was very easy, and I tapered off them gradually and stomach issues didn't return.

Really interesting comments. I’m about to be prescribed amitryptaline (I can’t spell it either😆) for stomach & duodenal discomfort- I’ve heard anecdotally it works for 80%…..would be great to hear some positive stories!!! @Jenhahaton9 what sort of stomach pain do you have along with your ibs?
