Any ENT specialists who can shed some light?

Almost 6 years ago I woke up, sat up, and felt a pop in my right ear. I couldn't hear much and thinking it was maybe wax or water I tried all the usual over the counter things.

I saw my GP who said it would sort itself out but when it didn't, I saw a private ENT specialist who did a test and said the hearing that was lost would never come back and it was likely caused by a virus. He said steroids may have helped if caught in the first few days but there was nothing that could be done.

I've learned to adapt to it but I've found myself wondering what sort of virus could have caused it and why it may have happened? Can anyone shed any light? Thanks x
