Lump on head

tribpot · 29/12/2007 10:27

In the last few days a lump has appeared on the back of my head, down near the bottom on the left hand side. Yesterday it started getting painful and today more so, and that whole side of the back of my head (if you get me) has gone numb.

Anyone got any ideas? Thinking about taking myself off to the Walk In Centre today but don't know if they'll be able to do anything.

walk in centre

most probably a sebacious cyst and the numbness might be because it's inflamed near a nerve

but definitely go and get it checked sooner rather than later

it sounds like it could be a cyst. You can be reassured that it is unlikely to be anything sinister for two reasons, one it seems to have appeared quickly and two, it hurts.

It could well be pressing on a nerve. I guess it depends on how long you want to wait, if you can reassure yourself then wait to see your doc, if, like me, you are a worry wart, go to the walk in centre, save your worrying.

FWIW, i used to have a lump in a similar area, it sort of came and went, not there now, i just had a feel, i had it for years, since childhood, never gave it a second thought. That was quite a large hard lump.

Thanks for the replies, I couldn't face the Walk In Centre after c. 2 hours in church with ds (at a wedding) but I think I will definitely see if the one in Leeds is open tomorrow, or give NHS Direct a call and see if I can go to the Out of Hours Centre.

Still flipping painful, I've got an ice pack on it now.

i had one of those, it lasted about a month and really hurt, just went on it's own in the end. must have been a cyst type thing.

Wow, you are made of sterner stuff than me to put up with it for a month! In the end I called NHS Direct this morning and went to the Minor Injuries Unit in Otley (wise choice, a fab, brand-new hospital comparing distinctly favourably with options in Leeds, none of which are open at the weekend it would seem).

Doc thinks it's a sebaceous cyst, although prescribed anti-bios, presumably meaning he thinks it's infected or summat? It turns out I've had one before (my mum tells me), she gets them quite frequently and so does my grandad, so that sounds like a likely diagnosis.

Anti-bios are making me feel sick and I'm only on dose one (Also we're ttc although the doc didn't ask me about that at all). Nurofen helping with the pain, though.

Thank you again wise mumsnetters!
