Hi
I'm sure I'm only engaged in latenight worrying since have been (mostly) reassured by the hospital but...
My 4 month old spent all day in paed unit today since he has a virus (coughing, sticky eye etc) but also has a slightly bulging softspot.
GP referred us to hosp to rule out viral meningitis. We saw the SHO and registrar and they also consulted with the paeds consultant. Final verdict was that he had no other symptoms of meningitis - is a bit miserable with a cold, bit of an up and down temp, whingeing more than normal but otherwise quite cheerful in between, feeding OK etc.. They checked BP etc, reflexes, and thought everything normal. The consultant's view was that this is an unfamiliar but documented symptom of viral illness sometimes...
We were sent home with a 48hr open access letter. I've been fine with it all day and evening and now - he still has the slightly bulgy fontanelle - I'm just going over the words meningitis and lumbar puncture and freaking out a bit. Every whimper is a highpitched whine and every red mark a spot to be glass rolled. I'm hoping someone else can tell me this has happened to them and everything went back to normal the next day?
