contraceptive injection and weight gain?

ive heard this can be a side affect. ive had some pretty annoying side affects already and decided not to go back in december for my second one. ive been 9 1/2 stone for some time (before and after baby) and have real problems trying to lose it. but now, im 10 stone. its the heaviest ive ever been and im wondering if its linked to the injection too. ive started a diet (although admittedly it isnt going well on only day two!) but if it IS the injection causing this weight gain, is a diet pointless? and when will the effects wear off?

nightowl i've been on the injection for years before and after pg and i too wonder the same as you. I'm about three stone heavier than i was before i went on injection. But i feel i use the injection as an excuse, cos really my life has changed and i am not as active and also the fact i have been thru a pg could be why i have put the weight on.

I'm v fed up about the extra weight but cannot get motivated to do anything about it. I am considering not going for my next inj as we are going to try for no. 2 and i think i will avoid the inj. in the future! Then i have nothing to blame but myself for the weight.

The thing that makes me keep having it is the fact you don't get periods, the thought of those and period pains again fills me with dread!

So not much help, but thought i'd let you know i'm wondering the same thing! Off to read colinsmommy's link now.

Nightowl, I used Depo for years and was advised by our Practice Nurse at the time that it didn't make you put on weight but could/did stimulate your appetite - pedantic difference I thought at the time as the end result was the same! But could explain why you are finding it hard to cut back.

I've been on it for 5 years, don't think it makes you put on weight. I lost a stone on it earlier in the year.

I put on 2 stone, became depressed (a major side effect of the injection)for no reason, which i had never ever experienced before, took 18months for my periods to return to normal, 2 years to concieve,2 miscarriages later i had a baby. All because of the injection i am absolutely convinced of this.
They do not prescribe the injection for those with a history of depression. This i was not told until i repeatedly mentioned that i had been suffering the symptoms of depression.I was advised that it can take up to 18 months for fertility to return to normal, this i knew,weight gain i also was aware of.
However, it suited me for those reasons mentioned, no periods or pain, heavy bleeding or pmt so i was happy to continue on it. It was later, in retrospect that i regretted having it for so long.
