too tall?

dd2 is very tall, and heavey. mentioned it to the new Hv onthe phone today, and they are gonna do a check on her height,weight head circ etc. she is 2years old and the size of her 4.5yr old sister. i told the Hv that altho it concerns me i didnt want to put dd2 on a diet (as was suggested at my old gp's) as i feel dd2 is in proportion, just excessivly large/tall/heavy. has anyone elses child height been moinitored for being tall?

No my ds been monitored but is the tallest in his class. He is 129cms and is 7 in Jan. He is and has always been on the 92nd centile. My dad is 6'4", brother 6'2" and husband is 6' so it does run in the family.

i'm 5ft 3, dh is 6ft, but dd2 is off the charts and has been since b4 1yr old. she was born on the 91st line but steadily rose thro the rest of the chart and is now way above it,(or was when last height/weight was checked). she is around 39lb, and about 100cm tall.

I'll be following this with a bit of interest. Have a friend whose 2 year old daughter is in 5 to 6 clothes already and they look stretched on her. However, I simply don't know how I could ever broach the subject. Her little girl doesn't look in proportion to me though. Sorry I'm thinking aloud but I as just thinking about this today ie what is 'normal' for that age?

everyone who meets dd2 is shocked when they find out she is just 2. most place her around the 4yr mark. some of her clothes are age 5-6, but i think they are just cut smaller, as most 4-5 clothes fit well.
she is now getting too big for her maclaren buggy (broke the weight limit last year anyway) but her feet are almost touching the ground now.

sorry misdee - not much help
but i too have a big toddler. he isnt off the charts - not quite - but is 98th centile for height and weight. probably about 92cm and around 34lbs. he is taller than my friends just gone 3 year old son. He does fit into 2-3 year old clothes though.
I worry as he is an august baby and when he goes to nursery, he will loook like one of the oldest when he is one of the youngest.

Hope all is ok - I am sure there is nothing to worry about but best get these things checked out.

Nt sure where ds gets it from - i am 5'6" and dh is 5'9" - and neither of us come from tall families

dd2 is a sept baby so will be the oldest in her class (1/9/02). she towers above the other 2 year olds in her nursery group and she is actually the youngest there as most turned 2 last term. they thougth she needed to be in the older group at 1st.

popsycal, was your ds large from birth? dd2 was. but as she has lept off the charts it a bit worrying.

misdee - ds was 3 weeks early and at 7lb 10oz he was just slightly below the 50th centile.

then once he started bottle feeding due to my paranoia (see opstnatal breastfeeding thread if you are interested why) his weight shot up and he started sailing through the thread - but so did his height
he is exactly in proportion and is slimming down loads now (an increasingly fussy eater)
he was weighed just after his second birthday and was 33lb 5oz....(now 2y and 3m and i have no idea what he is now - not much different though i suspect)

I spent his whole ifrst year worrying and now refuse to. Had all the comments from 'well meaning' strangers and relatives. but he is absolutely healthy and normal.

let us now how it goes

ps - burn the centile charts - ds's yellow book (red elsewhere apparetnly) used to be the bane of my life!
oh and i refuse to get him weighed officially now unless it is a landmark age - eg 1st birthday, 2nd birthday

misdee, I wouldnt worry too much - dd4 is very tall for her age, has always been over the 100th percentile, and at 2 1/2 is the height and wight of an average three year old and over 102cm tall. Her father is very tall, and I think genetics have just come into play, but I was also told that the percentile charts are already out of date for the rising height of the population iyswim. If your dd looks in proportion I would say she's fine. Dd4 is hypermobile and has had continued mobility developmental delay which is monitored, as it has taken her longer to master whizzing around than it has some of the smaller wiry ones!

she does have walking probs too, she is generally very clumsy, and gallops instead of walks. consultant says it may be due to her increased size. The new HV just wants new measurements taken, and to compare to previous measurements. Like i said, i wont be putting her on a diet as her height is (or was last time) perfectly in line with her weight, just off the charts.

Misdee may be faint comfort but DD1 who is now four was off charts for both height and weight but since turning 3 has slowed right down, in fact she has only gained 3lbs and grown 4cm in about 15 months. She was always well proportioned too. I am only 5'2" (on a good day if I stand up very tall) and DH 5'10" so we 'shouldn't' have had such a big girl really. DD2 looks to be heading the same way, still struggling to get cloth nappies to fit around her thighs BTW!

Intrestingly enough DD1 was never the most athletic/graceful of children with very little balance. That has improved considerably too over the last year or so - she started ballet lessons and swimming lessons last year which we thought had helped her but it may just have been coincidence. On the bright side she has been wearing the same clothes for over a year now after having to buy replacements very bloody 3 months before!

Finally I was similar as a child reaching my adult height at 11 and weighing in at around 8 stone (which I would love to weight now), started periods at 10, boobs early etc. I went from being largest in class to smallest as everyone else caught up. We had kinda presumed that DD1 was following in her mothers footsteps.

thats what i was like too gomes, i was one of the tallest in my class, by the time i was 14 i reached my adult height too. ust wondering if that what dd2 is gonna be like, but she is a lot taller/heavier than i was. trying not to worry and read too much into it now.
