Deep ache in hip? Anyone had anything similar?

Hoochyhoo · 02/01/2022 23:08

For the last week and a half I’ve had a deep throbbing ache in my left ache. It’s worse when doing anything but still there even when I’m laid down so it’s constant.

Anyone had anything similar? Could it just be something simple? I will contact GP but don’t want to bother them unnecessarily if it’s nothing especially at the minute with everything going on with covid etc

Can you feel where the pain originates? It's possible you have bursitis, which is really painful and if you find the swollen are you eyes will water with the pain. I've had it twice due to an unstable hip joint and both times a steroid injection has been like magic, painful magic. I went from hardly being able to walk to dancing the night away 3 days letr.

There are all sorts of things that can cause hip pain. I have a pain similar to you describe currently and it's sciatica caused by a bulging disk in my lower back. Previously it's been caused by my pelvis being out of alignment.

Unfortunately, my experience of GPs and NHS physio is that they are unable to help much with musculoskeletal issues. If you can, I'd make an appointment with a private Osteopath (about £50). Mine will tell me at the first appointment how many ill need to fix and he's also sent me to GP once in the past when his investigations concluded that my shoulder pain wasn't musculoskeletal. (It was a liver infection!).

Meantime get lots of ice on it.

Arren12 · 02/01/2022 23:47

Sounds like sciatica. Bloody awful.

HP79 · 02/01/2022 23:49

I also came to suggest it could be hip bursitis. It's extremely painful! I've not had the steroid injections, but I hear they're good.

It’s really weird cause it’s not like a really agonising pain to the point I can’t walk etc but it’s just irritating. Just feels kinda swollen and achy even tho it’s not swollen if that makes sense? I have had a bit of lower back pain but don’t know if that’s related or not to be honest :/ Tried painkillers and an ibuprofen type gel to rub on it but that doesn’t seem to make any difference so I’m stumped

@IsDiscovered what did your osteopath do can I ask?

I had one for my dd and he just seemed to rest his hands on her. She was only a few days old at the time but I was unsure if he actually did anything. She seemed relaxed after mind you.

I want to go for my sciatica but im dubious.

I wouldn’t say it’s painful as such it just feels sore and achy. Really bizzare

Isn’t sciatica really painful though? This isn’t excrutiatingly painful or anything, just a deep ache kinda near the hip bone on the left hand side. If I’m sat up it’s slightly worse as it feels there is more pressure on the area if that makes sense

@Hoochyhoo

My bursitis was throbby/achey before it reached the really painful stage. It seemed to be caused by overuse (running) and went away of its own accord after I reduced my running to once per week.

I've got no experience for babies, but he makes what feel like very small adjustments to my back and hips and suddenly I'm fixed! It seems to be about trying to make space and release trapped or inflamed nerves.

I sometimes wonder if this what the biblical healers "laying on hands" were doing 😆

Arren12 · 02/01/2022 23:54

It can be really painful. It can be milder. I'm a wuss and mine is not excruciating right now just uncomfortable. I have had it worse.

I always thought it was very painful and I'm sure it can be, but mine isn't currently. It's a deep ache, the reason I'm awake now because I can't get comfortable to sleep, but I'm not in agony.

Hmm, that’s interesting.
I don’t run, but I’m wondering whether I’ve overdone it a bit somehow…

It’s really frustrating cause like I’m trying to think if there is anytime I could have hurt it or pulled it .. 🤔

@IsDiscovered thanks.

Yes probably they were Grin

Il give it a go. I have not had much luck with going to physio, i have had both nhs and private through the years. Maybe its because I don't continue the exercises they recommend for long enough as im a quitter.

That’s what I’m finding too actually. That I’m unable to find a way to sleep where I’m comfy … have you found anything that helps the aching?

Possibly hip dysplasia. A dull ache is how mine first manifested. It’s a birth defect that didn’t become apparent for me until my mid-30s.
There are steroid injections available for bursitis and dysplasia, and they can be followed up with denervations which can dull the pain for several years, so there are NHS treatments available if you push for them.

I’ll try the ice, thank you.

I’ll also try looking into finding a local oesteopath. Hopefully they can help. Although I’m not in any agonising pain or anything, it’s really irritating

My hip joint hurt when I had chronically low vit D levels - blood test & 7 week mega cause then maintenance course sorted the pain.

42isthemeaning · 03/01/2022 00:38

I've had an ongoing left upper thigh pain since April last year. The physio thinks it's bursitis. I had an nhs physio but it didn't improve. I've had steroid injections, ultrasound therapy and massages. It's still painful! I don't run and I did fall onto my knee a few weeks before the ache started which may have something to do with it, but it's probably unrelated.
I now go to a private physio and have lots of Pilates exercises to do and I'm starting a proper class next week, so fingers crossed. I just wish it would get better. Sorry not to be more positive, op! Good luck!

ABitOfAShitShow · 03/01/2022 01:06

I had these symptoms in the spring. Sometimes even on both sides. It was weird and definitely not sciatica but bad enough to keep me awake in pain. Anyway, I did nothing and it went away after a few weeks. Really odd though.

immersivereader · 03/01/2022 02:34

Weird because my left hip has been exactly as you describe for the past three weeks. Not agonising but niggling.

Really jolts when I get up off the couch from lying down (which is probably the problem causing it!)

Laserbird16 · 03/01/2022 02:45

It could be anything but deep pain in the hip can be a labral tear - damage to the cartilage that is in your hip socket. Really you'd need an MRI to pick it up.

If you find it uncomfortable to do hyper-flexion, hyper-extension and find sitting, standing, or walking for longer periods painful then it could very well be a labral tear.

They just happen sometimes or are associated with trauma. If you're lucky you can strengthen your hip muscles via physio and manage it. If you're unlucky you may need surgery.

See a physio

Laserbird16 · 03/01/2022 02:48

Oh and it may feel tempting but don't stretch a labral tear.
