Deep ache in hip? Anyone had anything similar?

Hoochyhoo · 02/01/2022 23:08

For the last week and a half I’ve had a deep throbbing ache in my left ache. It’s worse when doing anything but still there even when I’m laid down so it’s constant.

Anyone had anything similar? Could it just be something simple? I will contact GP but don’t want to bother them unnecessarily if it’s nothing especially at the minute with everything going on with covid etc

I get that feeling and I find glute stretches help. I’m rubbish at describing it myself but this on this page the supine pretzel stretch is what I was taught to do (though never heard that name before)

I find mine is worse when I’ve been sitting a lot. Sitting relieves some things and then tightens up everything else.

I was recommended that when you ice it, put an ice cube in a thin towel/tea towel so you can move it around the area.

I had terrible hip pain too due to very low vitamin D levels.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 03/01/2022 05:54

I had hip pain. Started out as an ache, then went to a sharp pain. Turns out I had an extra bit of bone on my femur, which wore a hole, my labrum was calcifying and I had osteoarthritis. Total hip replacement followed. I was mid-40s.

Whilst everything was being investigated I was prescribed Naproxen. You can buy it OTC in the U.K. in a smaller dose.

Thank you, I’ll try that 🙏

Ouch. Hope your feeling a bit better now?

Was it both sides or just the one side?

Thank you. I’ll have a look at that :)

I find when I sit in certain positions it puts more pressure on my hip and makes it ache more

How old are you? Crippling joint pain is one of the many joys of the menopause.

Hoochyhoo · 03/01/2022 10:03

@Laserbird16

Oh and it may feel tempting but don't stretch a labral tear.
Ooh ok, hopefully the doc will have some idea what it is. I won’t do any stretches or anything just yet tho as I don’t want to make it worse!

I had these symptoms in the spring. Sometimes even on both sides. It was weird and definitely not sciatica but bad enough to keep me awake in pain. Anyway, I did nothing and it went away after a few weeks. Really odd though.
Same here, hoping mine just disappears. It’s really odd actually.

It kinda feels like I’d be wasting the docs time as it’s not an excruciating pain or anything. Though I do need to get it sorted.

Weird because my left hip has been exactly as you describe for the past three weeks. Not agonising but niggling.

Really jolts when I get up off the couch from lying down (which is probably the problem causing it!)

Yes that’s the way I would describe it actually. Niggling & constantly there

I’ve got hip bursitis and I’d describe it like this. Mine is worse during the winter and it often wakes me in the night if I lie on the affected side.

Ugzbugz · 03/01/2022 10:10

I've had this in my left hip to and presumed it was my terrible posture working from home as its worse when sitting and doesn't hurt walking or even jogging. It started in my back and moved left. Not agony but annoying.

What helped it? Of course I’m assuming it’s better now 🙏

Have you had Covid recently? I had it start of November. Have had hip pain before when I've overdone walking but it usually settles quite quickly. Since having covid however it's been more painful than normal and hasn't gone away. Like you I'm reluctant to see GP but it's getting to the point where I need to I think. I like the adhesive heat pads which help a lot.

Yes! I had covid in November too. I had body aches then, not sure whether the hip ache is related but could be possible? It’s throbbing quite a lot today and I’m wondering what I can put on it so I’ll try some adhesive heat pads if I can find somewhere that sells them

What positions make it worse? You mentioned sitting. Here's some things that work for me, when you're sitting raise your chair/sit on a cushion so your hip isn't in hyper-flexion. When your sleeping do you sleep on your side? If so put a pillow between your knees to keep legs in line with the hip sockets. Or if your on your back pop a pillow under your knee to keep a bend in it. Plus those heat pads are very nice!

Rugbymumof2 · 03/01/2022 15:11

I suffered for over a year with hip pain, with covid and everything I left it as wasn't a priority so see anyone but it got so bad it was constant, couldn't sleep on my left, was limping after sitting for more than 30 min at a time, was ok walking say around town but then ached and was stiff after.

Finally booked in with a physio and wished I had so much sooner, said it was a bursitis on the first visit, used altrasound, massage and exercises, only took 5 visits and its pretty much gone now.
Just a few niggles every now and then if sitting for extended periods or I have a very active day.

Use a gel like voltarol with the higher % of diclofenac, 2 to 3 times a day, I was told to do that for a week to help settle it when we first started the exercises.

I find lying straight makes it worse so I try to sleep with my left leg slightly elevated.

It’s worse if I bear weight on it which is the majority of the time 😔

I also find if I’m sitting and my left leg is crossed over my right leg it hurts more. If I put the right leg over the left it’s a bit better. X

Sorry to hear you suffered for a year. I sympathise with you.

So glad you managed to get it sorted tho.

Is that gel available to buy in somewhere like boots? I tried an ibuprofen type one and didn’t find it helped

I've had similar pain but sort of brushed it off. Went to hospital for an x-ray after hurting my back (thank you two popped lumbar discs) and the doc casually told me I have osteoarthritis. It can be a nightmare trying to get comfortable sometimes. Like toothache deep in my hip.

I take tramadol for combined back / hip pain and use the Voltarol 2.32% muscle rub. A TENS machine helps too.
