For the last 3 or 4 days I've had worsening pain and tenderness on the top/back of my right hand. No trauma that I can think of, and I don't drink so no 'blackout' mishaps! I've been diagnosed with osteoarthritis and osteoporosis, so they might be contributing, but I wondered if anyone has experienced similar and can advise me on what to do.
The pain is worst when I flex the back of my hand slightly towards the wrist. I feel a painful pressure in the joints between hand and wrist, but I don't think it's the wrist itself. Seems much more like the very bottom of the back of the hand itself - if I press a finger into the indents between hand and wrist, they're very tender. The pain radiates across the back of the hand towards my knuckles and actually extends into the middle finger. The pain at rest is uncomfortable and a bit burny. Typing this message makes the middle finger and back of hand sore. But if I turn a tap on or off, or flick a light/power point switch the pain shoots through the back of the hand towards the wrist. It's horrible. I can't easily hold a filled kettle or saucepan with the right hand, stuff like that.
Thumb and base of thumb seem completely unaffected. Does anyone have any idea what the diagnosis might be? I don't want to bother GP or A&E but equally don't want to risk further damage if something can be done. Have just ordered a splinted hand brace online which is arriving on Friday.
