Omeprazole making gastritis/heartburn symptoms worse

Hi all,

Has anyone found taking omeprazole has worsened their heartburn/gastritis symptoms?

I started taking it on Monday (I’m 20 weeks pregnant) but have felt worse ever since, especially at night. Wasn’t sure if it was something that takes a while to kick in and I should stick with it but I’m feeling utterly miserable!

Speak to your gp - I believe there are alternatives. I couldn’t sleep with omeprazole.

The side effects of omeprazole can be pretty rough, and they're mainly stomach issues ... like the one you're trying to get rid of. See if you can try a different med...

Shouldn't make it worse, no. Takes about 2 weeks to fully kick in but we saw a slow improvement each day with DD.

Can you take gaviscon while pregnant? Gaviscon double action was also v helpful for DD.

Thanks all.

I’m beginning to wonder if it’s an issue with my gallbladder/gallstones instead of gastritis. I’m on omeprazole and domperidone which aren’t helping, Gaviscon/Rennie doesn’t work and the pain is now radiating to my right side/back. I’ve also got pale coloured stools.

But then the pain isn’t so much of an ‘attack’ like you read with gallbladder pain but has been intermittent over the last few days. Pretty fed up of it all!

@5star123 I would definitely speak to your GP again and tell them all about these symptoms as it could be anything and possibly not related to acid reflux at all x

pinkmews · 26/12/2021 00:20

No but it gave me chronic diarrhoea. Lovely.

Call 111 asap (if you're in an area that has it) and see what they suggest. If you aren't in an area with 111, then I'd be calling your out of hours GP as your symptoms don't sound quite right and need further investigation as soon as possible.

I had this a couple of times. Starts off with dullish ache for a few days then went full blown shakes, sweats and very intense pain. I had a gallbladder infection each time.

They do a test where they put their hand where your gallbladder would reach down to when you take a deep breathe in and if you have pain by that point you most likely have infection. Luckily I got AB's but if they didn't work quick enough I either had to go in for IV AB's or surgery to remove my gallbladder.

Peppermint tea is good for clearing out
Your gallbladder, check if you can have that in pregnancy though.

Also you might actually have a kidney infection.

Thanks all!

I stopped taking the omeprazole on the day of my OP and my stomach pains have been much better (I was able to enjoy my Christmas dinner!) I do have diarrhoea and it’s still light coloured but I’ve read this can be a side effect of omeprazole so hoping it just didn’t agree with me and it will go back to normal in the next few days!

Your symptoms sound very much like mine when my gallbladder is playing up (I have sludge/stones) particularly the location and the pale stools.
I'd get that checked.
Ppis like omeprazole are handed out (seemingly) like sweeties. When I had h.pylori, the GP gave me antibs and omeprazole. He said if the antibs didn't work (I had to have 2 rounds as the first lot didn't shift it) he wouldn't give me more, I'd just be put on omeprazole forever Hmm
I ended up with LOW stomach acid which has the almost exact same symptoms as high stomach acid which the fuckers had been prescribed for. Hmm
Definitely get your GB looked at.

Took six weeks before I really started to notice a difference and I have had to cut a lot of things out of my diet. You can't just take the pills and hope it will all go away. You need to find your main triggers by process of elimination, starting with the known culprits first. Also, lots of gaviscon (or supermarket equivalent) before bed, making sure you've left two hours since taking your tablet. I take mine first thing in the morning and an hour before tea.
