Constipation in 18 week old baby

Hi everyone

Was looking for some advice before I go to the docs - my 18 week old son is constipated. He's bottlefed which I guess is causing the problem. I massage his stomach, exercise his legs and on the doctor's recommendation, dilute his feeds but nothing seems to be working. Has anyone else got any ideas???

Have you given him lots of water? My dc suffered with this, although I think older, so I'm reluctant to give the same recommendations, see the doc.

He really hates water from tap to bottled! A bit like his mum I guess

Hmm. You could try giving him a little orange baby juice, rather than just water. He might accept it more happily and the fruit will cause a natural softening of the stool.

My lo is 19 weeks, no experience of this as yet though, is he on first milk or hungry baby formula?

apple juice works wonders.

Thanks for the juice suggestions. Very interesting. He's on hungry baby formula now but I found he had the same problem with the first milk too, but probably less so

Hi Kitkat

My 16 week old daughter is experiencing the same problem. Hasn't had a poo for 5 days except a tiny hard pellet yesterday morning. NHS Direct advised diluting feeds (she is on SMA Gold) with an extra ounce of water. My daughter doesn't like boiled cooled water either so they recommended fresh orange juice diluted 1 ounce of juice to 6 ounces of water but not to change everything on the same day.

Basically i just wanted to let you know you are not alone and if i find anything else helpful i'll post it for you. will you do the same?
