Need advice on getting zinc into a child without causing nausea

That's it really. One of my dc's benefits enormously from zinc, helps concentration etc. But it makes him feel really sick. Anyone with any experiences of giving zinc and dosages, or other natural "concentration aids", I would be v v happy to hear from you. At a loss.

Can you not increase the amount of zinc rich food in his diet?

coldtits · 20/12/2007 09:42

isn't seafood rich in zinc?

have you tried fish oil? You can get them in taste free capsules, Nordic Naturals do a good range, pollutant free. I think it has helped my ds. WE also take a solgar multi vit for children, which has zinc in it - i crush the tablet and mix it with a bit of juice and he seems to like it - they are chewable and nice tasting.

here

or here if they're not keen on meat or fish

Just adding ground almonds to breakfast cereal helps quite a lot. Hoummous is also an excellent source.

thanks all.. haven't heard the ground almonds thing, are they rich in zinc? he has the fish oil. I give him prawns but they're so expensive there's a limit to how often i can. I think he needs bigger doses than available in food as it comes. And no one gets the same nausea? ruty does your solgar tell you how many mg zinc per tab?

just had a look - it says 1.5 mg a tablet, not a lot, is it, but over the age of 6 you give them 2 tablets a day.

candypandy · 20/12/2007 09:58

Mine were 30 .. so no wonder. Tho' I've been told by doctor that he does have a zinc deficiency and I need to address it.
Maybe should try smaller dosages more often.

Make sure she has it with food- it always makes me feel very sick on an empty stomach.

thanks -- had to go away
will follow up all suggestions
but probably after christmas, and nausea-inducing chocolate consumption anyway!

honestly think 30 mg a day is too much for a child, but you could consult a naturopath..
