Could my leg pain have something to do with my periods?

I have had quite bad leg pain in both legs that is considered to be to do with my lower back (bulging disc, possibly a prolapse, its uncertain) but I've been doing physiotherapy and do my exercises every day and I'm pretty much pain free every day. That is until the first day of my period, when it suddenly comes back. It happened last month and I thought hmm odd but just a coincidence, but then it happened again this month. No change in exercise levels or doing anything out of the ordinary to explain why it suddenly comes back. I'm reluctant to ask a doctor about it because I'm afraid they'll say I'm being ridiculous (they haven't been much help in general with this, only the physiotherapist has made a difference)

I used to get horrendous pains in my shins when I was on my period so in my non medical opinion yes it might be linked.

SparklingLime · 16/12/2021 17:05

I had awful pain down my right sciatic nerve, down my leg on the first day of every period. I’ve seen other mention pain into thighs.

WakeUpLockie · 16/12/2021 17:07

My sacroiliac/sciatic pain flares with my period too. So do all my other aches and pains (hands, neck etc)

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 16/12/2021 17:08

Is it possible that you have endometriosis?

Midlander88 · 16/12/2021 17:09

Definitely! I get period leg pain every month for the first day. Even my toes hurt. I realised it was just cramping all down the legs, but didn't feel like normal muscle cramping.

Try heat on the legs (hot bath, electric blanket etc) and see if it helps.

But yeah, definitely mention it to Dr.

OhShutIt · 16/12/2021 17:11

Another Endometriosis/Adenomyosis sufferer here. Took me years to make the period/sciatic pain link. Now it's like clockwork. However, for me it's 2-3 days before my period and disappears about day 2.

Google it.

Todayissunny · 16/12/2021 17:12

Have you tried giving abdominal muscles a really deep massage? I have what sounds to be similar and find it helps.

growyourown77 · 16/12/2021 17:14

Once I was told I had endometriosis (after an ectopic pregnancy op) and then read up on it, all my period related thigh made made sense.....

allofthecheese · 16/12/2021 17:16

I get really achey legs when I have my period too. Especially my thighs.

squirrelnutkins1 · 16/12/2021 17:18

Same for me in my thighs. Endo sufferer here too x

poblwc · 16/12/2021 17:20

I get terrible leg/hip pain on the first few days of my period. Apparently it can be related to having a retroverted uterus.

Natsku · 16/12/2021 17:23

I don't get other period pains like cramping so endometriosis seems unlikely, its literally just my legs, from the hips down to the calves that's worse when I'm sitting down but eases a bit when I walk around. I'll try heat to see if it helps, painkillers don't anyway.

I'm just googling this. This is really interesting. I feel as if I'm going around in circles trying to find out what is causing my pain.

Bananarice · 17/12/2021 01:48

My legs used to hurt during heavy periods, before I had dc1. It is strange that majority of periods pain/ side effect of periods stopped after being pregnant. I too, have retroverted uterus.

Natsku · 17/12/2021 07:55

Pregnancy changed my periods so much too, they used to be really heavy and irregular but now pretty normal, if slightly on the heavier side and regular as clockwork. Pregnancy has such an impact.

I have this. Suspected endometriosis.

Deedoo · 01/03/2025 10:21

@Natsku
did you find out what it was

@Natsku

I don't remember, but I guess it just went away in the end because I have no recollection of period related leg pain! Still get leg pain sometimes, but only when I've been inactive for too long (like been sick for a couple of days and been mostly on the sofa)

Deedoo · 01/03/2025 11:19

@Natsku yiir prilepsed disc went away

Natsku · 01/03/2025 11:28

Perhaps that's it.

OP posts:
Deedoo · 01/03/2025 12:17

@Natsku That's brilliant did you rest to help disc go back in

Natsku · 01/03/2025 12:24

No, my physiotherapist told me the worst thing to do with back pain is to rest, as it just worsens things. I did regular gentle exercise and the physiotherapy stretches to fix my initial pain issues. I don't remember what I did about the monthly reoccurrence but probably carried on with the stretches.

OP posts:
Deedoo · 01/03/2025 12:35

@Natsku do you remember the exercises x

Natsku · 01/03/2025 16:02

Not any more but it was ones that focused a lot on strengthening the core.
