Head injury query - any medics around?

I suffered a nasty head injury 5 weeks ago - stood on an implement in our garage and the handle came up and hit me full force in the forehead.

I know I have concussion as I had it 9 years ago so know the signs. However, this time I am suffering really bad headaches which paracetamol don’t seem to help at all. I spoke to my GP 2 weeks ago who has arranged a CT scan but the appointment isn’t until early January. ☹️

I am normally very level headed with health issues but this is now causing me some anxiety as some days/nights the pain really is unbearable.
I haven’t vomited at all, vision is a little blurry but nothing serious and my blood pressure is absolutely fine.

I suppose I am just worried as I didn’t have this pain with previous concussion but did feel dreadful for 3 months. Does anyone think this is just concussion again but slightly different from previously? I am wondering if I have a minor skull fracture but really hoping it isn’t an internal bleed. I don’t want to act like a wuss going to A & E just because I’m a bit concerned.

Any thought gratefully received.

go to A&E, better to be safe

Another vote for going to A&E. you have "unbearable"pain. It needs checking - now.

Fet2021duejuly2022 · 05/12/2021 14:44

Yes go to a&e

KittenCatcher · 05/12/2021 14:45

If you have persistent headaches and blurred vision then you need to get this checked, if you are relucant to go to hospital then phone 111 but I think they will tell you to go to a&e.

SoupDragon · 05/12/2021 14:45

DS had headaches for a month or two after a rugby concussion but they weren't "unbearable pain". I agree you need to be seen by a doctor.

SirVixofVixHall · 05/12/2021 14:46

I agree too. You really need to be seen asap.

heldinadream · 05/12/2021 14:47

I winced reading that. Please get properly checked out, OP. I think A&E for sure.

At a minimum you can make an emergency appointment with the optician with new blurred vision. They can refer on/signpost if needed tomorrow if you do nothing today.

I think you would be best off going to A&E if the pain is unbearable. Even if you have experienced a concussion previously, they aren't all the same. The fact that you stayed conscious and didn't vomit is positive. But there are cases where it can take quite a while to completely recover from what seems like a minor concussion. (It can happen with sporting injuries like heading a football.)

purplesequins · 05/12/2021 14:53

what fid you fo following the initial injury?
bedrest in a darkened room without stimulus (noise, visial)?

PatterPaws · 05/12/2021 15:03

I'm not a medic, but I do think you should get an earlier scan. January is too long to wait. Good luck OP.

JadeSeahorse · 05/12/2021 16:08

Wow, thanks so much for your replies.

The slightly blurry vision is really only very slight and I did have this last time so not worried about that. I must admit I did sarcastically laugh when the scan appointment letter came through. January! I am still going to go though just in case there is anything lasting.

The pain isn’t unbearable all the time. It is there constantly - has never gone away - but last night for instance I had to sit up all night as the pain had moved to the back of my head and I couldn’t bear any weight on it. My forehead is still a little tender to the touch.

I think I will give it another few days and if still no improvement I may well go to A & E. When I first did it the immediate pain was agony but I pulled myself together and just carried on as normal. Definitely didn’t lie down or anything! (I know, I’m a right PITA 🤣)

Again really appreciate everyone’s thoughts.
