blood in stools test - maybe TMI?

Hi, I had a stools test earlier in the year as had blood. TMI I know but when I did the sample I could not see any blood in the stool and the result came back negative. I am just wondering what the testers were looking for and what the test can say about your health. Since having the test I have had regular bouts of blood in my stools and have used pile supposotries (sp?) which then the blood goes and the returns a few weeks later. I know I have to go back to GP am sure it is piles as quite itchy but just wondered what the test was about and what it can tell.
thanks

They were probably looking to see if the blood was internal in which case it would have been mixed in with the poo or if it was comming form the outside such as from piles. That's what I think but may be wrong.
